Darkness and Light follows Kang-yi, a seventeen-year-old student who returns to her coastal hometown of Keelung for summer vacation. The town, a quiet fishing port near Taipei, forms a backdrop where everyday life is colored by duty, memory, and a stubborn pull toward connection. Kang-yi grows up with an absent mother and a family that relies on her to bridge worlds: she tends to her intellectually disabled younger brother, cares for her blind father, and shoulders responsibilities for her grandparents. The family lives together in a crowded apartment above a small massage parlor—their livelihood, managed by Ming-shiou Tsai who plays Kang-yi’s Father, and anchored by the steady presence and love of those who remain. In this environment, Kang-yi becomes the quiet center that keeps everyone in motion, guiding daily tasks, work at the parlor, and moments of normalcy in a life marked by loss.

A new neighbor enters the picture: Fan Wing as Ah Ping, a young gangster from a mainlander family who moves into the same building. Ah Ping brings a different energy to the block—a sense of risk and possibility that slowly draws Kang-yi out of her protective shell. As the two spend time roaming the neighborhood, their friendship and then budding affection offer Kang-yi a glimpse of a life outside the apartment walls and away from the weight of caregiving. Their outings expand from familiar streets to a trip to Taipei, where the city’s pulsing pace and new experiences light a small flame of personal freedom for Kang-yi.

But the romance intersects with danger. The pair becomes entangled in a gangland conflict, and Ah Ping is killed, a blow that lands with devastating finality in Kang-yi’s life. The tragedy is compounded by Kang-yi’s father falling ill and passing away after his own journey to Taipei with his daughter, leaving the family to confront fresh grief while trying to hold the pieces of their world together. In the wake of these losses, Kang-yi must navigate an even more fragile emotional terrain, balancing the weight of responsibility with the ache of love and memory.

The film’s ending unfolds as a dreamlike tableau that lingers after the screen goes dark. A fireworks shower lights Kang-yi’s window, and in a surreal sequence, both of the departed figures—her father and Ah Ping—appear at the family table, greeted warmly as if they have been granted a second presence in the home. This final moment blends remembrance with a fragile sense of reunion, inviting readers to hold onto memory and hope even as life continues to move forward.
