In a small town in the Deep South, Charles Eliot “Bubba” Ritter, a large but gentle man with a mental disability, forms a steadfast friendship with Marylee Williams, a bond that stirs unease among some locals and draws the ire of the brooding postal worker Otis Hazelrigg. When Marylee is mauled by a vicious dog, Hazelrigg quickly blames Bubba and gathers a lynch mob with Skeeter Norris and Philby and Harliss Hocker. To shield him, Bubba’s mother disguises him as a The Scarecrow and posts him in a nearby field, yet the bloodhounds sniff him out, and the vigilantes gun him down in a brutal moment of crowd-driven justice.
After Bubba’s death, the town learns that Marylee survived the attack thanks to Bubba’s brave intervention. Hazelrigg responds with a cruel, cynical claim, placing a pitchfork in Bubba’s lifeless hands to make it look as if Bubba attacked them. When the case goes to trial, the vigilantes are released, hampered by a lack of evidence and Hazelrigg’s perjury, which casts a long shadow over the courthouse and leaves Marylee and Bubba’s loved ones to cope with the aftermath.
Marylee, haunted by what happened, slips out at night and seeks Bubba at the Ritter home. Mrs. Ritter, unable to reveal the truth, tells her that Bubba has gone away; Marylee stubbornly insists that Bubba is not gone, only “playing the hiding game.” This moment deepens the sense of mystery and unresolved grief in the community, as the memory of Bubba lingers in the house and in the fields around it.
Months pass, and a scarecrow reappears in Philby’s field, mirroring the disguise Bubba once wore. Hazelrigg guesses that Sam Willock, the district attorney, might be behind this eerie echo, and the tension escalates as fear and suspicion ripple through the town. That night, Harliss comes home to find the scarecrow missing and hears unsettling noises from his barn. Investigating the loft, he is toppled into a wood chipper that starts on its own, and he dies in the gruesome mechanical trap.
News spreads that the wood chipper’s fuel, or its control, has been tampered with, reinforcing Hazelrigg’s belief that Bubba’s spirit is back with a vengeance. The next day, Skeeter wants to confess, but Hazelrigg insinuates that Bubba remains alive and responsible for the misfortunes. That night, Philby’s death is added to the mounting mystery when he is trapped in a grain silo and suffocates as grain crashes down around him.
Hazelrigg and Skeeter dig up Bubba’s grave to prove Bubba’s coffin is empty, only to find Bubba’s body still inside. In a chilling moment of panic, Hazelrigg kills Skeeter to cover his tracks and then refills the grave. Later, driving while intoxicated, Hazelrigg spots Marylee alone on a road and gives chase into a pumpkin patch. A plowing machine begins to move of its own accord, forcing Hazelrigg to flee. He roams blindly through the field, convinced the machine is after him, and crashes into the scarecrow—now possessed by Bubba’s spirit and gripping the pitchfork that had once marked Bubba’s corpse. The scarecrow impales Hazelrigg, mortally wounding him.
As Marylee hides in the pumpkin patch, she looks up to see the scarecrow watching over her and smiling. The moment reveals Bubba’s spirit returning from death to enact revenge through the inanimate guardian he once wore. The scarecrow lowers its head and presents a flower, and Marylee whispers a quiet, hopeful line that signals a new, fragile beginning: she says, “Thank you, Bubba.” With that, she begins to plan for the next day, imagining a new game they can play together in a world where Bubba’s memory and courage endure.
