Katie Higgins, played by Esther Williams, is the wholesome daughter of a dairy farmer. The Higgins family—Pa, Ma, Suzie, Katie, and Junior—start the day with a brisk song and a morning swim, a joyful ritual that bonds them through their simple farm life. When a traveling salesman named Windy Weebe Jack Carson drifts into town, his instant attraction to Katie sparks a playful yet cunning plan. He hawks an elixir that supposedly makes a person peppy and fit, and he suggests that the entire family should attempt to swim the English Channel, impressed by how powerful they look in the water.

With the lure of a grand challenge, the clan and Windy travel to England, where they learn that the Channel is about 20 miles long in a straight line, but the currents can stretch the journey to as much as 42 miles. Katie emerges as the strongest swimmer, and she begins training with Windy Weebe as her coach, a regime that tests her limits while weaving in the pull of new, complicated emotions and the thrill of a once-in-a-lifetime quest.
