Ray Lloyd runs a successful Cypress Gardens water show, a bright, crowd-pleasing spectacle built on synchronized routines and dazzling aquatic artistry. Yet his star attraction, Julie Hallerton, is overworked and unappreciated, and Ray remains oblivious to the fact that she loves him. She tries to nudge the situation by fibbing about a pretend marriage to her aquatic partner Hank to spark Ray’s jealousy, but Ray gently persuades her to join him on a trip to New York instead, opening a door to new opportunities and shifting dynamics.

Julie is hired to pose for a lipstick advertisement, and in a twist of fate, handsome singer Barry Gordon fills in as the male model and shares a kiss with her. Barry offers to introduce Julie to a promoter who promises to hire her for a New York water show he produces, with assurances of higher pay and kinder treatment than what she gets back home with Ray. The prospect of better treatment and greater exposure tempts her, complicating her feelings toward Ray.

Returning to Florida, Hank confronts Ray, challenging him to recognize Julie’s true feelings. A roommate twist occurs when Nancy Parmel accidentally hits Julie with a water ski, knocking her unconscious. In the tense moments that follow, all three men rally to Julie’s side, underscoring the emotional stakes of the love quadrangle.

In the end, Ray comes to understand that he loves Julie, and the pair share a heartfelt embrace and kiss. Barry, sensing the shifting tides, pivots toward another bathing beauty, while Nancy reveals a romantic interest in Hank, leaving the relationships in a new, unresolved balance as the curtain falls.
