On a luxurious trans-Atlantic crossing, Wendell Graham, a millionaire by inheritance but famous for his immense irresponsibility, sets his sights on the charming Betty Harrington. Betty is drawn to his reckless charm, yet her strict aunt, Aunt Minnie Van Varden, harbors a clear disdain for him. Amid the sea voyage’s bustle, a small band of dissidents pursues financial backing for a revolution back home in the fictional country of El Dorania. Believing that showing generosity to their cause will win [Aunt Minnie]’s favor, Wendell agrees to fund their efforts with a hefty $100,000, hoping the pledge will secure his place in her eyes.

Meanwhile, in El Dorania, the man behind the scenes, the casino owner Zander Ulysses Parkhurst—known simply as Zup—finds himself thrust into a dramatic turn of fate when he wins the country’s crown in a wild craps game with King Oscar. Oscar has deliberately lost to place the monarchy in the hands of a candidate who can be assassinated, and Queen Carlotta informs him that royal reigns in El Dorania have averaged only about a month before an assassin’s blade or a bomb cuts them short. This cunning setup sets the stage for a precarious balance of power where luck, ambition, and danger intersect.

Wendell is told by the revolutionaries that, once they topple the current monarch, he will be crowned in their stead. The prospect excites him, as it would demonstrate to Aunt Minnie how far he has come. Upon arriving in El Dorania, he discovers the monarch is none other than his old Brooklyn friend, Zup, and the reunion is cordial only for a moment before the real goal becomes clear: to seize the throne by eliminating Zup. The plan unfurls under the guidance of General Bogardus, who masterminds the assassinations and even approves the modern method of execution—bombs dropped from airplanes.

As the national celebration unfolds, Wendell works to disarm the bombs and reassures Zup that there is nothing to fear. Yet misfortune and miscalculation collide when the bombs are re-armed without his knowledge, and they begin to detonate. The two friends flee for their lives, their escape unexpectedly aided by a stroke of fortune when one of the bombs lands on a rich oil deposit, triggering a gush that changes El Dorania’s fortunes forever. The country suddenly sprouts wealth, the revolution fizzles, and Zup remains on the throne, while Wendell’s personal triumph comes in the form of winning Betty’s hand in marriage—much to the chagrin of Aunt Minnie, who had hoped to guide her niece toward a different future.
