In 1900 Rome, humble carpenter Francesco is unexpectedly recognized as a member of a declining noble family. He becomes entangled with the cynical Prince Torquato Terenzi and falls for the elegant Duchess Elisa. After Terenzi’s death, Francesco learns the inheritance is worthless, prompting him to enlist for the Libyan war, only to return disillusioned. Pursuing his dream of singing, he departs for America with Elisa.
