When the young daughter of police captain Richard Malinowski is raped and murdered, the investigation quickly zeroes in on a suspect named Daniel Eckmann. Despite the absence of witnesses and the lack of forensic evidence, the jury convicts him and sentences Eckmann to 30 years behind bars. From his cell, Eckmann begins writing to the detective, pouring out a mix of sorrow over the tragedy and a stubborn insistence on his innocence.

As the letters circulate, doubts start to gnaw at the policeman. He launches his own quiet inquiry, driven by a feeling that the case doesn’t quite add up. His digging leads him to a troubling possibility: Salinas, a notorious serial killer of children, had been in the vicinity at the time of the crime, casting a long shadow over Eckmann’s conviction.

In parallel, the prisoner’s communications reveal another line of contact—Christine, a female sympathiser whom Eckmann asks to push his case and his version of events. A letter is smuggled out, urging Christine to provide false testimony in support of his release. A retrial is ultimately held, and Eckmann is freed, receiving compensation for the lengthy ordeal.

Yet freedom arrives with uneasy questions. Eckmann meets Christine and proposes starting a new life together, but she begins to doubt the man she’s been corresponding with. He tries to bridge the growing skepticism by calling Malinowski to arrange a personal visit, and the detective agrees to a meeting.

The reunion takes a dark turn. Malinowski serves Eckmann a whiskey laced with a sedative, and when Eckmann regains consciousness, he finds himself bound with duct tape beside an open grave—the very site where the girl’s body was discovered. In a chilling declaration, Malinowski reveals that he always believed Eckmann was his daughter’s killer and, with that claim, he buries him alive. The film closes on a haunting note that questions justice, memory, and the line between vengeance and the law.
