Cornbread, Earl and Me 1975

Cornbread, Jamaal Wilkes, is a star basketball player on the verge of turning his neighborhood’s dream into reality, potentially becoming the first from his district to secure an athletic scholarship to college. His two younger friends, Earl Carter, Tierre Turner, and Wilford Robinson, Laurence Fishburne, regard him as a local hero and a bright light in their community.

After a pickup game ends early because of a heavy rain, the trio heads to the corner store to wait for the rain to clear. Everyone else leaves, but they linger, sharing jokes and planning futures while the streets shine with rain. The playful moment grows tense when Earl and Wilford bet that Cornbread can dash home in 25 seconds. He buys a final soda and bolts into the wet night, his escape routine shadowed by the sudden quiet of the neighborhood.

Unseen by them, an assault suspect in the area dresses like Cornbread, turning a simple game into something far more dangerous. The two police officers pursuing the suspect chase through rain-slick alleys, a pursuit that ends with them briefly losing the target in the downpour. When they step out of an alley, they see Cornbread running and mistake him for the suspect they’ve been seeking. In a single, devastating moment, Cornbread is shot in the back.

Wilford’s frightened scream erupts into a riot that envelops the neighborhood, exposing the fault lines between fear, anger, and the longing for change. The coroner’s inquest becomes overshadowed by police intimidation, with witnesses silenced and the truth obscured. In the midst of the turmoil, Wilford emerges as the one who can articulate what happened, taking the stand to recount the events in graphic detail and insisting on a clear account of the night.
