In a quaint European town centered around a lively town square, the everyday flow of life meets the glossy allure of ultra-modern beauty. Swan runs a juice stand with her mother, and her boyfriend Franz tends a nearby bicycle shop, weaving a simple, affectionate rhythm into the town’s chatter. Yet this peaceful routine is unsettled when Doctor Coppelius arrives with a gleaming, cutting-edge beauty clinic that erupts in the square like a gleaming promise. The clinic is staffed by robotic assistants, and its centerpiece, Coppelia, appears as a glamorous muse. Coppelia, Erica Horwood, embodies the Doctor’s ideal of beauty, though she is ultimately a sophisticated creation rather than a living person.

Advertising storms the town through posters and TV spots, pulling in more and more residents with the siren call of a new look. Among those swayed by the spectacle are the Mayor, Darcey Bussell, the Baker, Irek Mukhamedov, the Hairdresser, Jan Kooijman, and Swan’s mother, Glynis Terborg. Each visit to Coppelius’s laboratory seems to grant a moment of glamour, yet what really happens is far more insidious: the doctor stores the strongest traits of their personalities in containers, siphoning away essence and using it to fuel Coppelia’s life-like presence. After treatment, the townspeople drift into a trance-like state and begin to worship their reflections, convinced that their altered appearance marks real change, even though their outer selves remain the same.

When the robot Coppelia drugs Franz with a perfume, Swan realizes something dangerous is afoot and rallies help from friends to mount a rescue. One of those allies is JingJing Mao, a friend of Swan, who stands with her in the fight to reclaim their town. The plan centers on a sinister heart machine, a device that siphons love from Franz and feeds it to the artificial muse. A helmet is placed over Franz’s head to draw out his heart’s love and transfer it to Coppelia, who wears a matching helmet. In a tense moment, the robot Coppelia momentarily achieves a flicker of humanity, a sight that delights the Doctor even as the rescue closes in.

Swan and her friends burst into the laboratory, and the true power of their relationship—rooted in authenticity rather than appearances—begins to overload the heart machine. The device short-circuits as the couple’s genuine love pours through, and the laboratory starts to crumble around them. In the rush, the essence that Coppelius harvested from the townspeople is released into the air, washing back over the square and reversing the trance that had taken hold of so many. Swan opens a hatch in the clinic’s roof to help emit the escaped essence, letting it return to the townspeople and restore their true selves.

As the clinic collapses, Coppelius flees the town, leaving the residents to reclaim their ordinary lives. The moment marks a renewal rather than a victory for vanity: the community rediscovers the value of being themselves, and Swan, Franz, and their friends—re-energized by love and friendship—celebrate a renewed sense of self and togetherness. In the end, the town returns to its familiar rhythm, the square buzzing once more with honest joy and communal warmth, and the people step forward with a clearer sense of who they are beyond appearances.
