The film unfolds through flashbacks that move between 1978, 1948, and back again, weaving memory with present sensations. In 1978, Lola Lamar sits at the Copacabana lounge in Manhattan, where the venue has transformed into a discotheque. Dressed in clothes revived from the late 1940s and nursing a heavy drink, she drifts into recollections of a much younger self and a different time.

In 1948, the young singer meets an aspiring songwriter, Tony Starr, when they both compete on a radio program. Tony is instantly drawn to Lola and quietly becomes her ally, helping her push into show business. The pair begin to rise as the Copacabana becomes a showcase for their talents, and their shared ambition hints at big dreams on the horizon.

Yet Lola is swept away to Havana to perform in a flashy nightclub act, convinced that this path will catapult her toward stardom. Meanwhile, Tony’s own career gains momentum at the Copa, and success seems within reach for both of them. The ascent is complicated by the demands of Lola’s mentor and boss, Rico Castelli, who makes a heavy price a condition of elevating Lola’s career. What follows is a collision of ambition, power, and danger, culminating in a violent moment where Tony dies in Lola’s hands during a desperate fight over a gun.

As the timeline loops back to 1978, the elder Lola, visibly aged and torn by memory, is intoxicated and haunted by what she has done. She envisions a younger version of herself dancing with Tony on the crowded dance floor, a bittersweet vision that reframes the entire story as a meditation on fame, memory, and the costs of ambition.
