Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen 2004

In this captivating coming-of-age tale, Mary Elizabeth “Lola” Cep (15), a fiery and ambitious young actress from the heart of New York City, is thrust into an unfamiliar world when her family relocates to the suburban oasis of Dellwood, New Jersey. Her social landscape is further shaped by encounters with Sam, a charming classmate who takes notice of her, and Carla Santini, the queen bee who seems determined to make Lola’s life miserable.

Lola’s dreams of stardom take center stage when she auditions for the school play, a modern retelling of Pygmalion titled Eliza Rocks. Much to everyone’s surprise, she lands the coveted role of Eliza, outshining Carla in the process. However, her newfound success is short-lived as Carla vows to exact revenge and Lola’s chance at buying Sidarthur concert tickets slips through her fingers when her mother takes away her allowance. Desperate to attend the farewell show, Lola concocts a plan with Ella, only to have it foiled by her own carelessness.

As the night wears on, Lola and Ella embark on an adventure-filled escapade, traveling to New York City in search of tickets to Stu’s after-show party. However, their plans are once again thwarted when Lola accidentally leaves the ticket money on the train. Undeterred, they decide to take a stroll through the city, where they stumble upon an unexpected encounter with Stu himself. In a state of inebriation, he stumbles out of the building and passes out in an alley, prompting Lola and Ella to spring into action. After a series of misadventures that culminate in a visit to a police station, the trio finds themselves at the doorstep of Lola’s father’s New York City address.

As tensions escalate, Lola’s deception reaches a boiling point. Initially, she had attempted to curry favor with Ella by spinning a yarn about her father’s demise, but the truth soon comes to light, revealing the fabricated tale. Ella, a paragon of honesty, is outraged and demands accountability from Lola, who ultimately confesses and pledges to never again compromise her integrity. This newfound sincerity earns Lola a second chance, as Ella forgives her transgression on the condition that she remains truthful moving forward. The trio reunites at the party, where they’re spotted by Carla, whose countenance betrays a sense of unease.

Offstage, Carla exacts revenge on Lola by denying their encounter and labeling her a liar, a claim that resonates deeply with the student body. Lola’s story about being arrested alongside Stu and leaving her necklace at his house falls on deaf ears. The experience leaves her disheartened, and she initially declines to participate in the play. However, Ella’s encouragement prompts her to reconsider, and Lola arrives backstage just in time to thwart Carla’s attempt to usurp her role. As she prepares to take the stage, her mother offers words of support, finally addressing her by her childhood nickname, Lola.

The ensuing performance is a triumph, with Lola delivering a stirring rendition that earns a standing ovation. The cast then convenes at an after-party hosted by Carla, where Stu makes a surprise appearance to reunite with Lola. Carla’s attempts to salvage her reputation are foiled when Stu presents Lola with her necklace in front of the gathering, exposing her lies and leaving her on the verge of tears.
