In a top-secret initiative funded by the National Security Agency (NSA), Quantum Tech Corporation has been working on Hypertime, a revolutionary technology that enables users to manipulate their molecular structure, effectively slowing down time. Initially designed as a wristwatch prototype, this innovation holds immense potential for espionage and manipulation. However, upon realizing the devastating implications of such technology in the wrong hands, the NSA orders QT to cease development. But QT's enigmatic leader, Henry Gates (Michael Biehn), has other plans.
Gates, driven by ambition and a desire for dominance, sees Hypertime as the key to usurping the NSA's authority and gaining control over the world. Utilizing the prototype, he gives his lead scientist, Earl Dopler (French Stewart), additional time to perfect the technology after his henchmen, Richard (Jason Winston George) and Jay (Linda Kim), thwart Earl's attempts to escape.
Unbeknownst to Gates, Dopler had secretly shared the Hypertime design with a trusted colleague, Dr. George Gibbs (Robin Thomas). When Zak (Jesse Bradford), Dr. Gibbs' son, stumbles upon one of these prototype watches, he initially uses it for his own amusement, much to the delight of Francesca (Paula Garces).
However, once Gates discovers the leaked technology, he launches a clandestine operation to retrieve the prototype. His henchmen infiltrate Zak's home, searching for evidence and setting off a chain reaction that ultimately leads Zak to uncover the sinister motives behind QT Corporation's true intentions.
As Zak's world begins to unravel, he finds himself on the run from Gates' goons, dodging danger at every turn. After a high-speed chase culminates in a dramatic crash, Zak awakens in hospital with a mangled watch and a newfound sense of urgency. He must evade capture once more and find a safe haven before his father becomes entangled in the web of deceit spun by QT Corporation.
As QT Corporation's desperation to recover the coveted watch intensifies, Zak and his father are unwittingly transformed into fugitives wanted by national security agencies. In a desperate bid to warn Dr. Gibbs of the impending danger, Zak and his girlfriend Francesca embark on a perilous journey, tracing Dr. Gibbs' whereabouts to a hotel where he was staying. Unbeknownst to them, Dopler is also hot on Dr. Gibbs' trail, seeking assistance in unraveling the mystery surrounding the watch.
Meanwhile, Gates, Jay, and Richard intercept Zak's father before him, snatching Dr. Gibbs from his hotel room in a brazen move. With their plans foiled, Zak and Francesca find themselves wandering aimlessly through the streets, only to be forcibly apprehended by Earl Dopler, who is hell-bent on reclaiming the watch. The teens take control of the situation by taking Dopler hostage, coercing him into helping them rescue Dr. Gibbs.
As Dopler's reluctance slowly gives way to his desire to repay Dr. Gibbs' kindness, he agrees to lend his expertise in mending the broken watch and creating unconventional weapons capable of extracting individuals from Hypertime and returning them to reality. These innovative devices are equipped with paintballs filled with frozen nitrogen, which 'freeze' a hit person back into normal time.
With Dopler's assistance, Zak and Francesca orchestrate a daring break-in attempt, but ultimately get caught by Henry Gates, Richard, and Jay. The trio finds themselves imprisoned alongside Zak's father, only to escape when the NSA Agents arrive and dispatch Gates' goons. As the dust settles, Zak accelerates in Hypertime, achieving a state of "light" (Einstein's theory seemingly vindicated), before breaking free with his family.
In the midst of chaos, Henry Gates prepares to eliminate Zak and his father from Hypertime, but is thwarted by Dopler's timely intervention. With a paintball filled with frozen nitrogen, Dopler brings Gates back down to reality, defeating him in the process. The authorities arrive to apprehend Gates' henchmen, confiscate the watches, and bring an end to the tumultuous events that have unfolded.
As the dust settles on the aftermath of Gates, Jay, and Richard's capture, Dopler seizes the opportunity to reconfigure his revolutionary machine, designed to mitigate the ravages of hyper-time that had prematurely aged him. In a stunning turn of events, the device inadvertently rewinds Dopler's clock, returning him to his youthful state as a teenager (Miko Hughes). This sudden transformation forces him into an extended stay with the Gibbs family, where he must navigate the challenges of adolescence once more.
Meanwhile, Zak's world is filled with joy and harmony as he finally achieves his dream of reuniting with his loved ones. With his family by his side, Zak claims victory in the form of a brand-new set of wheels, which he promptly commandeers for a high-speed escapade with his girlfriend, sister, and now-teenage Dopler in tow. As they zip off into the horizon, a sly glance at his wristwatch reveals that Zak has yet to relinquish its time-traveling powers, opting instead to indulge in a thrilling Hypertime adventure on his own terms.
