Claire Dolan, played by Katrin Cartlidge, is an Irish immigrant in America and a sex worker who does not enjoy the profession, but owes her pimp money and must continue to work. She travels to Newark, New Jersey, where she has a cousin, and takes a job in a salon, forming a relationship with her cousin and Siobhan.
Soon she begins to receive suspicious phone calls; at work, she is summoned to the line and there is no one on the other end. At home in the middle of the night she receives another call, and after hanging up, the phone rings again. She feels unsafe, sensing that perhaps Roland has found her, so she leaves her apartment and walks to a nearby bar. There, she sits at a man’s table and asks if he is waiting for someone; when he says no, she asks him to dance with her. They dance for a few hours, and the next scene shows her waking up in his bed, implying she sought a safe place to spend the night.
When she returns home, something feels off. He watches her speak to someone (Roland) and then follows her to a hotel where she stays for some time before giving up waiting. At Dolan’s apartment, there is a knock on the door. Elton Garrett, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, confronts her about who she really is, where she lives, and whether she has a pimp or owes him money. Over the next days and weeks, they go to work and meet afterward, and Elton discovers he has real feelings for her; the pair openly acknowledge their love.
Elton goes to see Roland, who has been waiting for him. Roland, Roland Cain, grabs the other man by the throat and declares that Claire always was and always will be a whore and that he should get out while he can. The film hints that he may be Claire’s father, a detail underscored by his conversations with an Eastern European prostitute in a hotel room, showing his detached, calculating nature. He returns to the city, while Claire goes to the doctor and receives a clean bill of health. She continues to see a few clients, but during one visit, she thinks she sees Elton’s reflection on a balcony outside and pulls the window open; her client enters, leaving the window ajar for air, and they carry on, with Elton visible on the balcony.
With enough money to pay off Roland, Claire goes to settle the debt. Roland asks whether she plans to keep her baby and congratulates her, offering a lump sum “for the baby,” but she refuses. She packs a suitcase with a quiet resolve and heads to the airport.
Elton is seen walking down the street with a blond woman when Roland passes by and stops him to say hello. Elton introduces the woman as his wife, and they exchange a brief, if tense, interaction. The woman is seven months pregnant with a girl, underscoring Claire’s uncertain future and the complicated web of relationships surrounding them.
