Duane Balfour Douglas Smith was born into a family shadowed by misfortune in the prairie town of Ridgeburg. After losing a high school election to his rival Chad Milton Nicholas Carella, he sets his sights on a larger contest: running for mayor against Ridgeburg’s long-serving incumbent, Mayor Milton Alberta Watson. With only one other challenger—a homeless man—the race quickly takes on a personal and stark character, as Duane challenges the status quo with the support of his brother Maurie Devon Bostick and the wary eyes of the town.

Duane carries a deep-seated grievance toward Milton because she approved the police shooting of his father, who had grown violent while trying, unsuccessfully, to warn the town that the ridge’s namesake could collapse under the strain of heavy mining and insect tunneling. This looming threat intensifies the stakes of the election and feeds Duane’s push for accountability, a push that is also shaped by Maurie’s backing and the distant circle of family members who watch the race unfold.

With Maurie’s support, Duane makes a bid for the mayor’s office, yet the effort ends in a disappointing defeat. After withdrawing from the race, he and his uncle Bingo drive back to his house from Ridgeburg’s ridge, the mood tense and unresolved. The narrative then cuts to an underground moment: a tunnel beneath the ridge, where an insect is seen removing rock from the rock-hard earth, a quiet, almost uncanny sign of a growing catastrophe that few outside the ground seem to notice.

That subterranean movement culminates in a dramatic landslide, triggering the implosion of the ridge itself. Duane and his uncle observe the cataclysm from the back of their truck as the landscape literally tears apart, an image that underscores the real consequences of ignoring warning signs. The dawn that follows brings a razor-sharp turn of fate: Mayor Milton suffers a heart attack after witnessing the ridge collapse, a moment many interpret as a grim acknowledgment that Duane’s father’s warnings had merit all along.

By day’s end, the political landscape has shifted in an unexpected way. The homeless man ascends to the mayor’s seat with three votes, Milton’s ballots being deemed invalid, and Duane having already stepped back from the race.
