Commercial Attaché Dr. Otto Dernburg travels from South America to Germany for important business negotiations, and his eye falls on the attractive Carlotta Ramirez. He begins by visiting his younger Ralf Dernburg, who shares an attic apartment with his lively friend Charley Sallmann. The pair are expecting the charming Swedes, Ulla Bergström and Britta Nielsen, but they dread their strict uncle Niels Bergström. Anxious about keeping the evening from going wrong, Charley’s unknown aunt, who had planned to join them, cancels at the last moment, leaving the two men feeling the weight of the situation. Britta and Ulla are not keen on spending the night with the two men alone, and so the pressure to improvise grows.

For the sake of his brother and to save the evening, Dr. Dernburg dons a disguise and pretends to be Charley’s aunt. The ruse quickly becomes more tangled when Charley’s father and his uncle Niels arrive, adding to the already delicate balance of lies and appearances. Yet the “fake aunt” somehow manages to placate both visitors, buying time and keeping the charade from collapsing. As the night wears on, the real aunt arrives—Carlotta Ramirez—and the situation reaches its comic peak. At first, Carlotta is irked to find a stranger wearing her dress, a gown that Dernburg’s own errant butler had once stolen. She deftly taunts the fake aunt, but refuses to expose the deception, allowing Dernburg to slip away unscathed.

The morning after, the tension shifts again when Carlotta shows up dressed in the same gown Dernburg wore the previous night. She reveals that she had seen through the whole ruse, yet she does not hold a grudge against him. The misadventure ends on a light note, with honesty and good humor guiding the characters back toward a sense of understanding and mutual respect. In this playful game of disguises and expectations, the boundaries between business interest, romance, and family dynamics blur just enough to leave everyone wiser about appearances and intentions, and a little closer in the process.
