What Is By Design About?

The premise of By Design without spoilers.

After admiring a stunning chair in a showroom, Camille (Juliette Lewis) envies the simple, adored existence of the furniture and wishes she could be someone’s favorite object. When she magically swaps bodies with the chair, she discovers she is more appreciated as an inanimate thing than as a person, even confronting the bemused reaction of her mother (Betty Buckley).

By Design Echo Score Breakdown

By Design presents a daring concept that oscillates between intrigue and frustration, resulting in a mixed overall impression. Critics acknowledge the film’s visual ambition and occasional humor, yet many note its opaque narrative and uneven pacing that test viewer patience. User feedback mirrors this split, praising Juliette Lewis’s commitment while criticizing the film’s length and disjointed execution. Consequently, the movie offers occasional rewards but largely remains a polarizing experience.

Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.

  • Art & Craft 68

Regarding art and craft, the film showcases meticulous production design and striking surreal visuals that many reviewers found compelling. However, critics also point to an overcontrolled mise‑en‑scène that feels alienating, and users cite uneven lighting and costume work that detract from the aesthetic. Overall the craftsmanship is inventive yet inconsistent.

  • Character & Emotion 70

In terms of character and emotion, Juliette Lewis delivers a committed performance that several reviewers highlight as a strength. The supporting cast receives mixed remarks, with some finding chemistry lacking and the protagonist often described as emotionally distant. Consequently, the film’s character work achieves occasional depth but generally feels underdeveloped.

  • Story & Flow 55

Story and flow present the most pronounced challenges, as reviewers describe the plot as fragmented and the pacing as uneven. While the premise of a woman inhabiting a designer chair is praised for originality, many critics find the narrative opaque and the dialogue clunky, leading to frequent disengagement. Overall the storytelling feels ambitious but insufficiently coherent.

  • Sensory Experience 60

The sensory experience combines bold visual motifs with an eclectic soundtrack that some critics find intriguingly strange. Nevertheless, the film’s heavy reliance on interpretive dance and avant‑garde set pieces often feels excessive, and users remark on harsh lighting and costume choices that undermine immersion. Thus, the sensory elements are inventive but unevenly effective.

  • Rewatch Factor 45

Rewatch potential is limited, as many reviewers note the film’s demanding pacing and repetitive surreal sequences erode enjoyment on subsequent viewings. While a few cite its occasional humor and provocative ideas as reasons to revisit, the overall consensus points to a work that tests patience more than invites repeat engagement. Consequently, the film offers modest replay value at best.
