Hong Kong Regional Crime Unit inspector Sam Lam, Leon Lai, rapidly raids a transnational criminal organization and captures its elusive leader, Night, Terence Yin Chi-Wai.

Night spends a huge sum to hire a team of clever lawyers to defend him, throwing up roadblocks for Sam’s fiancée, Ann, Asaka Seto, the prosecutor on the case, who finds it increasingly difficult to secure a conviction. Despite the legal firepower, Night earns a surprisingly light sentence of five years. Fueled by a growing grudge, Night schemes with his older brother, Day, Richard Sun Kwok-Ho, to orchestrate a plan for revenge that reaches far beyond the courtroom.

After the case concludes, Ann and Sam take a vacation to Paris, hoping for a respite from the pressure of the investigation and the verdict. The trip briefly offers them a chance to reconnect, but the shadows of the case linger.

Back home, Day’s machinations unfold in a brutal turn of events: a killer Day backs shoots Ann in an elevator, and Sam is left to grieve a loss that redefines his life. The tragedy pushes him to quit the police force and retreat to Tai O, where he opens a quiet bar and seeks solitude away from crime and danger.

Night, who has won an appeal and been released early, returns with a clear and relentless resolve to punish Sam.
