Matthew Devereaux presides over a sprawling ranch and a mining empire born from relentless grit and a fierce, hard-working Irish settlement spirit that helped him rise to power. He raised his sons to carry on that same fire, but his stern, often distant demeanor never granted the three older boys—Ben, Mike, and Denny—the fatherly warmth they expected. They grow into capable, full-time managers of the ranch and other ventures, yet Matt clings to absolute authority down to the smallest decision, a habit that gnaws at their loyalty and fuels a growing unease.
Joe, Matt’s biracial son by his second wife, a Native American who pretends to be Mexican, occupies a delicate place in town lore. The locals call her “Señora” out of respect for Matt, but not for her, a nuance that underscores the subtle discrimination that still colors life on the edge of the Devereaux world. Matt’s power dampens the open prejudice toward Joe, provided Joe stays mostly to riding the range, keeps to his mother’s reservation, and avoids stirring the family business. Joe loves his father and would do anything for him, and over time, prompted by the insistence of his wife’s side of the family, Matt learns to appreciate and regularly converse with his youngest son, though the change comes slowly and with stubborn resistance.
That shift in attention feeds the brothers’ grievance. The three older siblings see Matt’s closeness with Joe as a subtle rejection of them, a perception that deepens the rift inside the family and hardens into a quiet, simmering tension.
When Matt, Ben, Joe, and two Indian workers uncover rustlers among the cattle—the two middle sons and four accomplices—their confrontation ends in tragedy as two of the accomplices lose their lives. Joe pleads for leniency toward his errant brothers, but an outraged Matt banishes them, only to reluctantly bring them back into the fold later when a different kind of crisis tests the family.
On Matt’s land sits a copper mine for which he has leased the mineral rights. After 40 head of cattle die, he suspects the mine is polluting a water stream vital to the herd. Enraged, he leads a raid on the mine offices and its director, drawing the attention of the authorities. A warrant is issued to arrest those responsible, and to spare his father the humiliation of a legal ordeal, Joe steps forward and takes the blame, receiving a three-year prison sentence.
During Joe’s incarceration, the old man’s health fails under the strain of family strife, and Ben’s fierce rebellion against their father’s authority helps push the patriarch toward a fatal stroke. Joe is granted a brief reprieve to attend his father’s funeral, where he severs ties with his brothers and declares a blood feud.
After his release, Joe returns to the ranch, only to be urged by his mother, the Señora, to forget revenge and seek a new life beyond the country’s borders. He hews to that wisdom for a time, but Ben’s fear of retribution gnaws at him, and he ambushes Joe in a desperate bid to kill him. Two Moons, the loyal ranch foreman, steps in and saves Joe’s life by shooting Ben dead just as he would have struck an unarmed foe.
Time passes, and Joe, now married to Barbara, visits Matt’s grave. There, he notices the down-turned lance—the Indian symbol for a blood feud—and breaks it in half, bringing an uneasy peace to a family long torn by pride, power, and punishment.
