Billboard 1998

Set in Los Angeles, the film centers on 12-year-old twin sisters, Emily, a surfer, and Tess, who trains with a high-diving team, as they try several schemes to help their widowed father, Max, a talented artist and sculptor, find a girlfriend. Their plan-making is earnest but often playful, and the twins’ curiosity about love and adult life threads through their daily lives, friendships, and family.

When the girls’ first attempts don’t pan out, they team up with their friend Cody to paint an enormous advertisement on a billboard high above Sunset Boulevard. The audacious stunt catches attention far beyond their neighborhood, drawing responses from many women who write letters or respond in surprising ways. Among these letters, Max answers a note from a woman named Debbie, setting in motion a chain of meetings and possibilities.

Debbie arrives with her friend Brooke as a back-up for the potential date, and soon Brooke and Max meet and discover a mutual rapport. Debbie agrees that they should start dating, at least to see where things might lead. The arrangement isn’t smooth at first: Tess and Emily aren’t fond of Brooke’s son Ryan, a skater with a rebellious edge, and the situation threatens to become complicated. However, an elaborate scheme conceived by Max’s business manager, Nigel, to break up the budding romance pushes everyone to rethink their plans. In a twist of resolve, Ryan joins forces with the girls to foil Nigel’s attempts to pull the couple apart.

The story unfolds with a blend of lighthearted humor and genuine moments, anchored by the creativity of the billboard stunt, the stubborn love of a father trying to move forward, and the growing resilience and teamwork of the younger generation.
