What Is Before the Streets About?
The premise of Before the Streets without spoilers.
Menacing smoke hangs over the forests of Manawan, where Shawnouk feels disconnected from his Atikamekw heritage and struggles with daily life on the reservation. His complicated relationship with his mother’s policeman boyfriend adds to his feelings of displacement. After becoming involved in a break-in, a confrontation leads to a violent act, leaving Shawnouk with blood on his hands and forcing him to flee into the vast forests of Québec. Seeking his roots, he confronts regret, pain, and anger, finding solace in the ancient trees and music of his ancestors as he faces a profound internal struggle.
