Spoilers ahead
Seven-year-old Cliff Bonsell lives a lonely life with his very elderly and widowed Bonsell father in a hut on a decommissioned American army munitions stores depot in rural England. Cliff’s world is small and quiet, shaped by a rough landscape and the absence of peers, until he befriends a slightly older neighbour, Willy Maxted. Willy is gentle and introspective, more drawn to music than mischief, and his only real treasure is a gramophone that plays a single recording: “Bang! She’s Dead/Lazy Day.” The two boys share a fascination with the idea of danger and power, and Cliff’s imagination begins to blur lines between play and real consequences.
