Gowrishankar Kamal Haasan, the managing director of a company in Madras, receives a letter from his old friend Pattabi Prathap Pothan informing him about the death of their teacher Indumathi Shoba. Reading the letter stirs a wave of nostalgia, and Gowri is pulled back into memories of a past that shaped him.

In their village childhood, Gowri, Pattabi, and Raghupathy were inseparable friends who shared the simple rhythms of school and play. The trio dreamily tests boundaries, even venturing toward a prostitute to explore something new and forbidden, only to flee the moment the door opens. Pattabi becomes drawn to the visitor, while Gowri’s heart leans toward Indu, the young teacher—an affection that feels impossible because of the age gap. Raghupathy, ever restless, seeks thrills by watching and urging his friends toward risks.

Gowri’s cherished daydreams begin to crumble when Indu’s fiancé arrives. The teacher starts spending more time with her fiancé, and Gowri is left yearning and unsettled. Tensions brew between Pattabi and Gowri as trivial quarrels bubble up, yet the trio remains bound by their shared past and their loyalty to one another, especially to Raghupathy who keeps the group together.

As time passes, the village postman becomes a troubling influence, exposing the boys to adult temptations and behaviors beyond their own boundaries. The friends also grapple with adult vices, like smoking, mimicking what they observe from Indu’s fiancé in a bid to feel grown-up. The fragile rhythm of their coming-of-age is violently disrupted by a tragedy: during a swim at the village pond, Raghupathy drowns.

When Gowri returns to Indu, he finds her tearful as well, and she opens up about her own pain and loss, deepening Gowri’s sense of sorrow and responsibility for the friendships that shaped him.

Now, in the present, Gowri’s life is colored by the memory of those days—the laughter, the secrets, the quiet promises, and the final demises of a teacher and a friend—leaving him with tears in his eyes as he contemplates how those moments spent with his friends forged who he has become. The long reflection reveals how a single letter can reopen a well of memories that blur the line between youth and the weight of adulthood, reminding him that the bonds of childhood endure even as they fade.
