The movie opens with a tense scene involving a convoy of soldiers transporting a highly classified package from Area 51. As the soldiers exchange speculation about the contents, a tragic accident occurs: a newlywed couple driving along the same road becomes distracted when the husband is receiving a blowjob, causing their car to crash into the truck and ignite a deadly explosion. The payload from the convoy is unharmed, and a monstrous zombie named Zeus (Richard Cetrone) emerges from the wreckage, tearing apart the soldiers who encounter him. Zeus swiftly roams towards Las Vegas, which has already been overrun by zombies, leading to the city being sealed off from the outside world with formidable walls.
Years pass, and Scott Ward (Tony Todd) is a former mercenary living a quiet life working at a diner. His life takes a drastic turn when billionaire casino owner Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada) approaches him with an extraordinary offer. Tanaka reveals that beneath the Vegas strip, under his hotel, lies a vault containing $200 million, and he wants Scott and his team to retrieve it before the U.S. government nukes the city to eradicate the undead menace. Tanaka promises Scott a share of $50 million for leading the mission.
Scott’s daughter, Kate (Ella Purnell), is volunteering at a quarantine zone, where she befriends a woman named Geeta (Huma Qureshi) and helps her care for her two children. Geeta hopes to bribe guards to escape the camp with her kids. Her main contact for a clandestine escape is Lilly, known as “The Coyote” (Nora Arnezeder), a skilled smuggler who assists people fleeing the zombie-infested city. The women face harassment from Burt Cummings (Theo Rossi), a volatile guard who mistreats the camp residents.
Haunted by the traumatic memory of killing his wife (who has turned into a zombie) in front of Kate, Scott grapples with guilt and estrangement from his daughter. Despite this, he accepts Tanaka’s proposal and begins assembling a team. His first recruit is Maria Cruz (Ana de la Reguera), an old friend and talented mechanic. She joins willingly, and together they seek out Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick), a retired colleague working at a retirement home. Their team expands to include Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighofer), a safecracker, Marianne Peters (Tig Notaro), a helicopter pilot, and Mikey Guzman (Raul Castillo), a zombie hunter.
The team prepares for the dangerous mission while Tanaka’s right-hand man, Martin (Garrett Dillahunt), briefs them using detailed blueprints. As they plan, Damon and Chambers join the team, though Damon leaves after learning about zombies. The team heads toward the city’s entrance, where they encounter Valentine, a zombie tiger guarding the approach. Lilly quickly reveals her ruthless side by shooting Cummings in the leg and tying him up, explaining her prior assault on women in the camps and her wish to sacrifice him as an offering to the zombies.
Inside, the team encounters the formidable Queen of the zombies, The Bride (Athena Perample), who inspects their progress before being led away. Zeus, the giant zombie, plays a key role, especially when he is seen leading a horde of alpha zombies and mourning The Bride after she is beheaded by Martin, who believes her head is more valuable than the money in the vault. Zeus’s grief and rage rally him to lead a brutal attack on the remaining humans.
As they delve deeper underground, the team faces numerous challenges: an accidental wake-up of hibernating zombies, booby traps triggered by careless movement, and betrayal from figure like Martin, who hides The Bride’s head to sell to Tanaka. Meanwhile, the team uncovers signs that Tanaka’s previous expeditions have been disastrous, with skeletal remains of previous mercenaries.
In the chaos, Dieter manages to open the vault, revealing the cash, but the mission is compromised by relentless zombie attacks. Maria confesses her motives are personal, not monetary, leading to a tragic death when she is overwhelmed and killed by a zombie horde. Desperation intensifies as Guzman is bitten and sacrifices himself with grenades, and Martin is gruesomely consumed by zombies after being betrayed by Valentine.
Scott and Kate race to escape amid the chaos, with Lilly holding The Bride’s severed head to distract Zeus while Scott and their helicopter pilot, Peters, try to flee. Zeus catches up during the escape, biting Scott but ultimately being shot in the head by Scott in a fierce battle. Knowing the city will soon be destroyed by a nuclear strike, Scott urges Kate to escape with Geeta’s kids, and he sacrifices himself to ensure her safety.
As the nuke detonates over Vegas, Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick) survives the chaos, emerging from the vault with his share of the money. He departs in a private plane, only to discover a bite mark on his arm, hinting at future danger. The story closes with the implication that the zombie outbreak might not be over, as Vanderohe prepares for a new journey into the unknown, leaving behind a trail of devastation and unanswered questions.
“Sometimes, the only way out is through the chaos.”
