On a stormy night in 1985, Thomas Curry, a lighthouse keeper in Amnesty Bay, Maine, discovers an unconscious woman washed ashore with a serious abdominal wound. Showing compassion, Thomas brings her into his home to care for her. When she regains consciousness, she introduces herself as Atlanna, claiming she is the queen of Atlantis. Despite her initial fear and confusion, a bond quickly forms between them, leading to a romantic relationship that endures for several years. They have a son named Arthur, who begins life unaware of his extraordinary heritage.

Their peaceful existence is shattered when Atlanna’s Atlantean family, including a team of commandos led by King Orvax, storm their home to bring her back to Atlantis. Atlanna resists, fighting fiercely to protect her family, but is ultimately forced to flee, promising Thomas she will return someday. Before leaving, she entrusts Arthur with her trident—symbolic of his potential to become a leader—and kisses Thomas goodbye, disappearing into the ocean and leaving her family behind.

Years pass, and Arthur has grown into a young man with a unique connection to the sea. As a child, he displays an unusual ability to communicate with marine life, capturing the attention of his peers and bullies alike. During a school trip to the aquarium, he is mocked for talking to the fish, but when a shark starts banging against the glass, the other sea creatures gather behind him, and his eyes glow with power, revealing his true nature.

Fast forward twenty years, we see a mature Arthur, played by Jaso n [Momoa] wielding formidable strength and skills. He becomes a hero known as Aquaman after a daring rescue of pirates led by Jesse Kane (Michael Beach) and his son David (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). During a confrontation on a submarine, Arthur fights off the pirates with ease, showcasing his impressive combat abilities. Jesse Kane fires an RPG at him, mistakenly believing he’s killed him, but Arthur remains unharmed. He retaliates by stabbing Jesse, who is then pinned under an explosion as water begins flooding the vessel. David, in a desperate attempt to save his father, is ordered by Jesse to kill Arthur, but realizing he is unwilling to harm innocents, he escapes as the submarine sinks.

Later, Arthur reunites with Thomas, waiting at the docks, and they attend a bar where Arthur’s heroism is confirmed as a news report shines a spotlight on him. Thomas reminds Arthur of his destiny: to unite both the surface and Atlantis. Meanwhile, Karen-Tan-Bee-Lin as Atlanna is shown to be alive, having escaped her execution at the hands of her own people. A group of Atlanteans led by Orm (Patrick Wilson) plans an attack on the surface world, aiming to invoke a war that will allow them to conquer the land and the seas. Orm seeks alliances, including with Nereus (Dolph Lundgren), although he secretly harbors intentions of subjugating the surface.

The story intensifies as Princess Mera (Amber Heard), the daughter of Nereus, warns Arthur about Orm’s plans, revealing that the Trident of Atlan — a legendary weapon necessary to claim the throne of Atlantis — has been discovered. Despite her urgency, Arthur remains hesitant, haunted by the belief that his mother was executed for bearing Atlanna’s child. As Orm’s forces attack a submarine in Atlantean waters, resulting in chaos, Nereus sides with Orm, and the conflict moves toward open warfare.

Despite a tragic tidal wave that endangers the mainland, Arthur’s resolve grows. With Mera’s help, he rescues his father from drowning and joins her in confronting Orm’s forces. They journey to find Atlan’s trident, traveling to an underwater sunken city and deciphering clues that lead them to Sicily. There, they encounter David, now calling himself Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who fights fiercely for his revenge. After a fierce battle, Arthur manages to defeat Manta with the help of Mera, who manipulates red wine into impaling her foe.

As they near the Trident’s resting place, they are attacked by the monstrous Karathen — a colossal sea creature that guards the artifact. Arthur communicates with her, proving his worth to wield the legendary weapon. Once accepted, he pulls the Trident from the skeleton of King Atlan, gaining immense power and a new armored suit.

Armored and confident, Arthur leads Atlantis’s forces against Orm, now calling himself Ocean Master, in a dramatic underwater battle. Orm aims to dominate, but Arthur, empowered by the Trident, uses its energy to shatter Orm’s weapon. In a decisive moment, Arthur spares Orm’s life, choosing mercy over vengeance. Atlantis begins to accept Arthur as their legitimate king, and Orm, defeated but alive, is taken into custody.

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna returns from her exile in the uncharted seas, reunited with Thomas, to begin a new life together. Arthur embraces his role as king and protector of both land and sea, acknowledging that his destiny was always to bring balance between worlds. The story ends with a reflection on how destiny unites people, as Arthur fully accepts his identity as Aquaman.

During the credits, it’s revealed that David survived, encountering conspiracy theorist Stephen Shin who is obsessed with Atlantis and Aquaman. David, now known as Black Manta, plots to find and kill Arthur, setting the stage for future conflicts.
