In Quebec, the Hipponomes are a family of refugees from Kabylia, led by the grandmother, Méni. The clan centers on Méni’s grandchildren—Étéocle, Polynèice, Ismène, and Antigone—whose parents were killed before the family fled their village. While Antigone shines in school with straight A’s, Polynèice slides into a life of crime as part of the street gang known as the Habibis. One ordinary day, as Étéocle and Polynèice are out with friends playing jacks, police intervene. A gunshot shatters the moment and Étéocle is killed, while Polynèice is arrested for assaulting an officer in the aftermath.

Through Antigone’s friend Hémon, the Hipponomes meet Christian, Hémon’s father and a local politician. He lays out a stark reality: with Polynèice’s criminal record and lack of citizenship, deportation to their homeland is a real threat. Faced with the possibility of losing their son for good, Antigone hatches a desperate plan to keep him safe. She resolves to orchestrate a prison escape, arguing that as a minor she might avoid harsher consequences. To execute the ruse, she persuades Ismène, who has dreams of becoming a hairdresser, to cut her hair so Antigone can pass as Polynèice.

Antigone visits the jail with Méni, and the two quickly switch clothes with Polynèice. The plan seems to work at first: Polynèice exits the facility, while Antigone inhabits his cell. But the scheme is uncovered by the prison staff, and Antigone is arrested for aiding an escape while Méni also faces arrest for helping. The turn of events shocks Antigone’s family, especially when a police officer reveals that Étéocle was also tied to the Habibis. Antigone clings to her family loyalty and insists she did what she did for them, even as the weight of the crime settles on her shoulders.

In the courthouse, the judge considers the gravity of Antigone’s actions and introduces legal aid, assigning a lawyer named O’Neil. He warns Antigone about the real danger of a criminal record and points her to the online debate that swirls around her case, where some social media voices question whether Antigone herself is a Habibi. Antigone remains steadfast, insisting her motive is pure family devotion rather than criminal affiliation, and she accepts O’Neil’s representation. Meanwhile, Hémon withdraws from school to rally support, and supporters flood the courtroom with energy, their cellphone ringtones echoing through the hall and underscoring the fervor of the moment as Antigone declares that her heart’s true desire is to protect her brother.

The public support becomes a viral sensation after Méni is bailed out, and the courtroom drama intensifies. With momentum on her side, O’Neil asks the judge for a suspended sentence, hoping to spare Antigone from a lasting conviction. But the prosecution shocks everyone by calling an unexpected witness: Polynèice himself. His appearance forces Antigone to confront the cost of the family’s sacrifice and the doubts that have flitted through the courtroom. She confronts Polynèice, questioning why he would risk everything the family had sacrificed for, and she criticizes the formal rituals of the court that feel detached from their lived reality.

Facing the possibility of losing her Canadian citizenship, Antigone’s fate pivots when Christian steps in to offer guardianship. Méni, weary of the fight, decides to return to her village with Polynèice, while Ismène remains hesitant to leave, seeking a loan to start her own salon. As the legal battle winds down, a quiet, intimate moment unfolds between Antigone and Hémon—they share a sexual connection that adds another layer of personal stakes to the case.

With the legal battle drawing toward a close, Antigone, Méni, and Polynèice head toward the airport, passing a younger refugee family who mirrors the family’s own arrival story. The journey toward a possible new life feels both hopeful and daunting, and as they move through the terminal, Antigone suddenly hears Hémon’s ringtone and hesitates, a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between family duty, personal choice, and the uncertain road toward belonging in a country that is both refuge and challenge.
