Another World 2012

The film unfolds in an ethereal afterlife called Another World, a realm populated by mask-adorned beings known as soulkeepers. Here, when someone is ready to release their past, they are guided toward a waterfall where memories drift away and the soul begins a new cycle—the memories become tangled ropes, and the act of reincarnation turns the soul into strands that can be knotted by unresolved resentments. If those knots multiply, a person can birth a frightening Seed of Evil inside them, and if that seed sprouts, the person becomes a powerful Wrath.

The story follows Gudo, a thoughtful soulkeeper who longs to understand why unresolved resentments take root as Seeds. He crosses paths with Yuri, who is desperately searching for her brother Kenji. Their shared goal and growing trust push them to journey together, and a genuine friendship forms as they navigate the strange rules of their world. To gain answers, Gudo guides Yuri to the Goddess, the ruler of Another World. There, the Goddess explains the nature of their existence and grants Gudo the ability to observe the past, a power that will become central to the unfolding revelations.

Meanwhile, in a neighboring kingdom called Flower City, a princess named Goran confronts the rising threat of her own Seed of Evil. Her uncle reveals the truth about her father’s death in battle, and the Seed within Goran tightens its grip as she faces neglect and whispered guilt. At the king’s funeral, a defecting general from the rival kingdom Nyer is arrested, fueling suspicion that the enemy may have played a hand in the royal demise. Goran’s world expands when a visit to the dungeon exposes her to a troubling version of events, including claims that the king took his own life. As Nyer presses forward, Goran’s Seed spikes, and she begins to slip toward a dangerous edge.

A pivotal moment comes when Gudo visits Goran for food, and he uses his power to show her the moments just before her father’s death. The glimpse unsettles her, and Dark Sky, Gudo’s bodyguard, pushes to kill Goran before her Seed ever fully sprouts into a Wrath. Gudo argues that she can still be saved if she hasn’t yet grown the horns of a Wrath, and, in a dangerous ruse, he makes it appear as though he has decapitated her. Their actions trigger a summons to Another World, and Goran returns to Flower City more unsettled and unstable than before.

Decades later, Flower City has fallen into ruin and is renamed Wheat Village. Keung, a wheat farmer, contemplates rebellion against the oppressive grip of Nyer, hoping to call upon the memory of the Ghost Princess Wrath to defend their harvest. He clandestinely visits the Requiem Temple, seeking the power needed to turn the tide. His encounter with Gudo reveals a painful truth: the so-called Ghost Princess is actually Goran, who has become a symbol of the people’s fear and guilt. The revelation leads to a complicated arc in which Goran’s Seed is eventually plucked, offering her a chance at redemption, though Flower City remains ruined. Gudo and Dark Sky confront the consequences of Goran’s actions and the shattered world around them, and a fatal confrontation with Dark Sky’s orders foreshadows a larger collapse of trust and leadership.

As Keung wrestles with the idea of becoming a Wrath, Gudo explains the danger of the Ghost Hand—a figure who once sought to save his people but became a Wrath and slaughtered them all, including his own daughter. The tale hardens Keung’s resolve, then tests it as Dark Sky intervenes, revealing that Duan, a senior Wrath who has suffered personal loss, has betrayed them. In the ensuing struggle, Duan is killed, and Keung’s own seed teeters on the brink of awakening. The loss of a friend drives Keung to renounce his vow to become a Wrath, and Gudo plucks his Seed before the rebellion can fully ignite. Yet the revolt falters in the face of treachery, and Keung dies as a Wrath-loyal faction collapses around him, though one farmer survives into the next reinvention of violence.

Back in the present, Gudo and Dark Sky realize that the accumulated ropes of resentment have begun to incapacitate the Goddess herself. She explains that the only way to undo the tangle is to resolve Gudo’s own long-held resentment, a pact that binds their fates together. Gudo agrees to reveal the truth of his commitment to Dark Sky, acknowledging that his own pact has shaped every turn of the story.

In the past, Yuri’s search for Kenji turns harrowingly tragic when famine and disaster strike their village after a landslide. Kenji dies of hunger, and his family, to spare themselves further suffering, cooks him into a stew. Yuri discovers that she has unknowingly eaten her brother, a revelation that threatens to push her into Wrath’s grip. Gudo intervenes to halt the transformation, but the Goddess orders Yuri to be turned to dust so that her Wrath cannot harm Another World. Gudo flees with Yuri into the forest and calls upon Mother Earth to understand the seeds’ creation. Mother Earth reveals that Yuri must reincarnate for a thousand years before she can emerge in a form free of a Seed from birth. Gudo agrees to oversee Yuri’s reincarnations for a millennium, provided he cannot fail.

The two then trace Yuri’s long odyssey through time as the reincarnations begin to surface in different ages. Yuri’s final incarnation, Ying, emerges as a young, orphaned child who labors in an industrial city during the early days of the Industrial Revolution. In a nearby factory, Gudo and Dark Sky observe Ying while Gudo weakens from his extensive journeys between worlds. Ying’s Seed stirs when she sees her protectors Hardy and Nana, and Nana’s death in a brutal accident ignites Ying’s Wrath. A fierce battle erupts, and Dark Sky manages to subdue Ying; Gudo seizes the moment to restrain her, a sacrifice that costs him his life.

As Yuri, now in the form of Ying, reflects on the long road she has walked and the lives she has touched, Gudo’s sacrifice is revealed to have borne fruit. He tells Yuri that she has saved Hardy, Kenji’s reincarnation, and that his thousand-year vow has been fulfilled, even as he dies. In Another World, Dark Sky escorts a fading Gudo to the Goddess, where they face the choice of what comes next. The Goddess reveals that Gudo can also reincarnate, a path that would erase his memories of Another World but allow him to begin anew. Gudo chooses to return to life, promising to protect Yuri’s future selves. He dissolves into the cycle and becomes a newborn in Ying’s city, while Yuri and Dark Sky watch over him as the story closes on a future renewed by his final act of sacrifice.
