Ashley, RJ Murugan, signs off from the merchant navy in Kochi for the second time, and the story unfolds through his thoughtful narration as he revisits the events of his last leave in that same port city. The film centers on Rasool, Fahadh Faasil, a tourist taxi driver from Mattancherry, Kochi, whose slow-burning romance with Anna, Andrea Jeremiah, a Latin Christian salesgirl at a popular apparel shop, sets the emotional tempo of the tale. Rasool’s pursuit is patient and persistent; he learns to read Anna’s routines and follows her as she travels to work, trying to show her the sincerity of his affection even as cultural and religious differences loom large.

One day, Ashley needs a favor: he plans to pick up a relative from a textile shop and enlists Rasool to drive the taxi. In that same ride, he discovers that Anna is heading home in the taxi as well. A quick stop at a church leads to Anna leaving her bag in the taxi, and Rasool meekly scrambles to take a step closer by obtaining her number from her phone. Nervous at first, Rasool is nudged by friends to send a message, and after an initial silence, a connection begins to form. Rasool finally musters the courage to tell Anna that he loves her, but she is surprised and retreats, leaving him with a fragile, unresolved response.

The next day, Rasool falls ill and stays home, while Anna repeats her daily boat ride with mounting restlessness. She cannot shake thoughts of Rasool, and when a text message finally arrives, she cannot wait to reply. Rasool rushes to meet her, and she confesses that she is scared that their love cannot endure the differences that separate them. Rasool reassures her that his love is unwavering and that religion will not diminish what he feels for her. Yet a further complication emerges when Anna invites Rasool to visit a convent, where a nun urges him to convert for marriage; Rasool declines with quiet resolve.

As the story unfolds, the nun is revealed to be Anna’s elder sister, who turned to convent life after a failed romance. Ashley harbors a soft spot for her but never reveals it, even as the lives around Anna and Rasool continue to entwine. The narrative threads through the circle of friends and family as rumors, judgments, and misfortunes press in on the couple. In a devastating climax, Anna takes her own life, a tragedy that weighs heavily on Rasool and tests the endurance of both love and faith.

The following year, Ashley returns again for another leave and reveals that he has found a new partner—the elder sister who had once chosen the convent, and he declares his love for her. She agrees to join him, leaving the convent life behind, and together they begin to build a new future. In the final scenes, Rasool is glimpsed traveling on a local train, a quiet and poignant image suggesting that he has left Vypin for a new life elsewhere, perhaps in Mumbai, leaving behind the city and the loves that defined him. The movie closes on a note of unresolved longing and the lasting impact of a relationship that challenged every assumption about love, faith, and belonging.
