Angela 1995

Angela, a 10-year-old girl, is trying to cope with a dysfunctional family while clinging to a desperate quest for purification. Her mother, Mae Anna Thomson, and her father, Andrew John Ventimiglia, are former musicians who have given up on their dreams and now navigate a fragile marriage. The dynamic at home is tense as Mae’s moods swing wildly—from moments of manic happiness to deep, crushing despair—placing an almost unbearable strain on Andrew, who does his best to hold the family together.

To make sense of the chaos, Angela and her 6-year-old sister, Ellie Charlotte Eve Blythe, begin to construct an imaginary universe of order and rules. They cling to scraps of religion, superstition, and fantasy as they try to distinguish good from evil and to impose some sense of control on a world that feels increasingly out of reach. They read everyday signs—how a towel falls off a chair, how a tool slips from a truck—and interpret them as messages or warnings guiding them toward something they call heaven. In their minds, these signs are part of a larger, sacred drama in which they must participate to save themselves and their loved ones.

As Angela weaves these tales for Ellie, the stories shift from bedtime fright to a desperate plan to heal their fractured family. The visions grow more solemn: fallen angels, the Virgin Mary, and other sacred tableaux become benchmarks in their quest for meaning and protection. Mae’s worsening condition intensifies Angela’s belief that the only way to save her mother is to wash away all of their sins, and the young girl feels an urgent pull to protect her sister and their mother through ritual and faith.

The neighborhood becomes a stage for the sisters’ odyssey as they encounter a chorus of strangers, each encounter brushing against the line between reality and the stories they tell themselves. What begins as a child’s attempt to impose order and comfort gradually hardens into a perilous conviction: that cleansing sins through ritual could redeem their family and restore a sense of heaven on earth.

In the climactic culmination, Angela leads Ellie to the river with the intention of baptizing them both. But the current proves overpowering, and Angela drowns as the water sweeps them away. Ellie is left standing alone, and then begins to rise from the river in a pose that echoes an angel, a haunting image that lingers long after the last scene.
