Set in 1963 Detroit, Melody Ellison, Marsai Martin, is a bright, imaginative girl living with her mother Idara Victor as Frances Ellison and her grandfather Frankie Faison as Frank Ellison. Early on, the family faces racism in their hometown: Melody is bullied at school by a white student named Donald, Garrett McQuaid and his friends, and she is wrongly accused of shoplifting at the clothing store where Frances works. A turning point arrives when a fellow student voices a wish to transfer to another school out of fear of discrimination, and the troubling news of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing on television makes Melody question the Pledge of Allegiance and even consider moving to a school in her own neighborhood.
