Amarnath, Dilip Kumar, a renowned lawyer celebrated for his unwavering sense of justice, crosses paths with Soniya, Nimmi, a milkwoman whose warmth and resilience leave a mark on him. Their first conversations hint at a growing respect and a tentative bond as Amarnath balances his demanding career with a personal code that shapes his actions.
Amarnath’s father pushes him toward marriage and shows Anju’s photograph. Anju, Madhubala, educated abroad and devoted to justice and aiding the poor, captures Amarnath’s imagination, and the two soon become engaged.
After a local fair, Shankar, Jayant, a local ruffian who seeks to possess Soniya, attacks her. In a desperate bid to escape, Soniya runs to Amarnath’s dark, isolated house as a thunderstorm begins. Inside, Amarnath, overwhelmed by guilt and fear, rapes Soniya.
Haunted by what happened, Amarnath struggles to conceal his act while moving forward with the engagement to Anju. Anju senses that something is wrong, but she cannot grasp what it is. Meanwhile, Soniya discovers she is pregnant, and, shunned by the village, she is branded a fallen woman.
Shankar pieces together who the father is and seeks retribution, but he dies by his own hand. Amarnath is accused of murdering him, and the truth about his relationship with Soniya begins to surface. The villagers’ anger threatens Soniya with lynching, while Anju stands by Soniya, offering protection and support.
In the climax, Anju ensures that Amarnath is married to Soniya in a formal union, and she leaves the village once her duty is fulfilled, allowing the couple to start a life together despite the social storm that surrounded them.
The story probes questions of justice, guilt, and the social codes that govern a small community, highlighting the resilience of those who choose to do right in the face of stigma.
