Cornelius is a musical critic who travels to Villa Tremolo, the summer estate of the famed cellist Felix, to write the musician’s biography. He is greeted by Jillker, Felix’s impresario, and Tristan, the devoted chauffeur, but Felix himself remains largely unseen as the house hums with a quiet, uneasy energy. Cornelius glimpses a fleeting moment of Felix heading toward a bedroom with a woman he mistakenly assumes to be Felix’s wife, a moment that plants the seeds of doubt and intrigue.

In the villa, Cornelius meets Adelaide, and tells her that Felix has retired with his wife. Adelaide reveals she is indeed Felix’s wife, and suddenly the portrait of the cellist shifts: Felix is not the solitary genius he appears to be, but a man surrounded by lovers who drift in and out of the estate and sport a collection of nicknames. Beyond Adelaide, each companion is given a special sobriquet, a habit of the house that blends affection with cunning and, at times, envy. One of the most talked-about figures is the self-proclaimed “official” mistress, Ms. Bumblebee, who meets and has a charged encounter with Cornelius, weaving his biography into the tension of the estate.

As the night unfolds, a moment of danger interrupts the quiet: while Cornelius lies in bed with Ms. Bumblebee, a woman enters the room with a pistol and fires several shots. No one is injured, but the incident leaves Cornelius convinced that Felix is the target of an unseen threat. He voices his fear to Jillker, who remains unconcerned, muttering that everyone must die and that the world will have to endure whatever comes. This sense of danger complicates Cornelius’s task; it becomes increasingly difficult to secure an interview with Felix, a setback that threatens to derail the entire biography.

Undeterred, Cornelius shares with Adelaide his worry that the looming danger could add a chilling edge to the narrative, all while hoping for Felix’s safety to be preserved. The tension reaches a boiling point when Jillker, citing Felix’s apparent moral decline, resigns as his impresario, leaving the house to reckon with its own shifting allegiances and appetites. Felix finally steps into the light to perform in front of his circle of lovers and the weary biographer, a public act that seems to promise clarity but instead deepens the mystery.

In the middle of the performance, the room notices a shift—another pistol emerges, another moment that could alter everything. Yet when the dust settles, Felix collapses on stage and dies, with no shots fired at the moment of his departure. The performance ends in stillness, and the estate is left to face the enigmatic gap Felix leaves behind.

Four days after Cornelius’s arrival, the lovers visit the coffin one by one, each remarking on the paradox of Felix: he looks the same, yet somehow different—a man who maintained a radiant public surface while harboring a private, fractured life. The estate settles into a quiet, unsettling stillness as the truth of Felix’s world lingers in the air, inviting questions about art, loyalty, desire, and the costs of a life spent in the glow of others.
