Superman: Doomsday & Beyond tells a compelling and action-packed story that explores the hero’s greatest challenges and sacrifices. The film begins with Dr. Leo Quintum and his dedicated P.R.O.J.E.C.T. team venturing into the Sun, only to be sabotaged by a genetically enhanced clone of Lex Luthor, who is working under the influence of General Sam Lane. During this daring expedition, Superman swoops in to save the day, but the battle leaves him critically altered; his body becomes overwhelmed with solar radiation, granting him new, incredible powers while simultaneously endangering his life.
In the wake of these events, Lex Luthor is arrested thanks to an investigative article by Clark Kent, who exposes his sabotage and plans, leading to Luthor’s sentencing to death. Superman, aware of his declining health, makes the difficult decision to keep his condition secret from the public. Instead, he confides in Lois Lane, [Christina Hendricks], revealing his true identity to her and choosing to spend his limited time with her. Eager to share a rare moment of honesty, Superman takes Lois to the Fortress of Solitude, where his behavior and the exposure to alien chemicals heighten her suspicions and fears, ultimately causing her to attack him with a kryptonite laser.
However, Superman reveals that his body has now become immune to green kryptonite due to the solar radiation he absorbed. This allows him to calm Lois, and he secretly confesses that he had been planning an extraordinary birthday surprise: granting her superpowers for just 24 hours. When she becomes Superwoman, they work together to thwart an attack by Subterraneans in Metropolis, just as the formidable Samson and Atlas arrive on the scene. Their playful interactions and heroic teamwork are highlighted when Samson shows Lois a newspaper headline reading “Superman Dead, by Clark Kent,” revealing him as Clark in a clever twist.
The story takes a daring turn when Superman, answering the unanswerable question posed by the Ultra-Sphinx, manages to save Lois and defeats Atlas and Samson in an impressive double arm-wrestling match, showcasing his newfound strength. As the powers begin to fade, Superman spends as much time as he can with Lois, cherishing every moment. Later, Clark Kent is invited to a tense interview with Lex Luthor at Stryker’s Island, where Superman’s energy unintentionally frees the Parasite, causing chaos within the prison. Clark manages to stop the villain without revealing his secret identity, earning Luthor’s respect and revealing a secret tunnel from his cell to facilitate Clark’s escape with the help of Nasthalthia Luthor, his rebellious niece.
The narrative then shifts to Superman, who has been busy repairing the city of Kandor by relocating it to a new planet, where Kryptonian architecture now adorns Earth. However, this utopian image is threatened when Bar-El and Lilo, Krypton’s first astronauts and Superman’s relatives, arrive with less altruistic intentions—aiming to transform Earth into a new Krypton. Unfortunately, they begin to show signs of kryptonite poisoning after passing through Krypton’s remains, forcing Superman to place them in the Phantom Zone at their request until a cure can be developed.
As the story progresses, Superman prepares his final testament in the Fortress of Solitude, having reprogrammed one of his robots to analyze the serum used to grant Lois her powers—serum he now hopes to control himself. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor succeeds in creating his own super serum by tricking the executioners and consuming it himself. His escape leads him to unite with Nasthalthia in a secret hideout, where his plans for domination continue.
The climax intensifies when Superman uncovers that Solaris, the star computer and Luthor’s ally, has betrayed him by tampering with Earth’s sun, turning it blue. A fierce space battle ensues, with Superman engaging Solaris and his robots. The sole hope emerges when Superman’s loyal Sun-Eater sacrifices itself to weaken Solaris, allowing Superman to destroy the tyrannical star computer. Exhausted and gravely ill, Clark returns to the Daily Planet, preparing his last article until he suddenly collapses. Just then, the super-powered Lex Luthor arrives, intent on killing Lois. Despite being powerless, Clark fights him off with a gravity gun—intended to warp time and drain Luthor’s powers early. In this intense confrontation, Luthor briefly comprehends the universe through Superman’s perspective, shedding a tear of understanding before discovering that Superman destroyed his spare serum.
As Superman’s body begins to disintegrate into pure energy, he shares an emotional farewell with Lois, expressing his love for her once and for all. He then flies into the Sun, sacrificing himself to save everyone. His consciousness, infused with solar energy, begins to merge with the star. Over a year later, a memorial service is held in his honor, though Lois steadfastly believes Superman is still alive, working on fixing the sun and waiting for his return. Meanwhile, Leo Quintum visits Luthor in his death cell, and, in a surprising act of redemption, Luthor provides a formula to recreate Superman’s DNA from a healthy human embryo—symbolizing his own attempt at atonement.
Within the Sun’s core, Superman, now a radiant solar being, is seen awakening and activating advanced machinery—ready to continue his legacy beyond his mortal life. His story ultimately reflects themes of heroism, sacrifice, and hope, leaving a lasting impression of how one hero’s actions can illuminate an entire universe.
