A few years after Josh Framm’s team won the football tournament and he began to accept a new kind of family dynamic, Jackie Framm has just married her veterinarian boyfriend, Patrick Sullivan. The household is buzzing with change as Josh and his best friend, Tom Stewart, just earned spots on their high school soccer team, and their coach reveals a surprising twist: the Timberwolves will become a co-ed squad. The season unfolds with a sense of possibility, and the friendship between people and their four-legged teammates grows deeper than anyone expected.
Josh encounters Emma Putter, a stylish newcomer from England whose family shadows loom over Fernfield after tragedy. Emma brings not only talent to the field but a kind of magnetism that draws Josh toward a new circle of teammates, including a golden retriever named Molly. Yet the real spark comes from an unlikely source: Buddy, Josh’s canine companion, reveals an uncanny ability to play soccer himself. In a spontaneous moment during practice, Buddy manages a spectacular goal, impressing Emma, Josh, and especially Andrea Framm, who has watched Buddy’s potential unfold from the sidelines. The revelation shifts everything: Buddy is recruited to join the Timberwolves for the third time, turning a regular season into something magical.
The social landscape thickens as Emma invites Josh to a party at her house. Tom shows up in a playful, over-the-top getup, adding to the lighthearted chaos. On the second floor, Buddy and Molly grow closer, a canine romance that mirrors the human connections forming below. Andrea Framm and her best friend, Tammy, are curious observers, quietly deciding to scope out the party and the changing dynamics around them. The mood brims with laughter, secrets, and the heart-stirring possibility that family can extend beyond blood.
But the soccer committee, guided by Jack Stearns, decides to ban the Timberwolves from the league because Buddy is on the team. The team must choose between removing Buddy or bowing out of the competition altogether. In the wake of the ruling, Molly gives birth to six puppies, turning Buddy into a proud father and complicating the team’s future even further. The Timberwolves’ fate seems sealed until Spartans all-star captain Steve Stearns confronts his father, triggering a reconsideration. The Timberwolves receive a call from their coach, Coach Montoya, who is brought into the loop by Jackie’s husband-to-be, and a new plan takes shape. After careful reassessment, the committee reverses course, and Buddy is officially reinstated as a Timberwolf.
With Buddy back in uniform, Josh and Emma join forces to lead the Timberwolves toward the state championship, facing the formidable Spartans once again. The road to victory is messy—first-half lapses and a scramble to rally—but the canine ensemble holds the line, guarding the puppies and guiding the team back to the field as the game unfolds. The crowd roars as Buddy delivers a game-winning goal, sealing the championship for the Timberwolves.
Months later, Buddy’s influence extends beyond Fernfield. He helps the United States women’s national soccer team clinch the FIFA Women’s World Cup in a tense penalty shootout against Norway, cementing Buddy’s legacy as a true team player and a symbol of perseverance, teamwork, and the unbreakable bond between a girl, a boy, and their extraordinary canine friend.
