In the dead of night, a car crash outside a quiet Oxford gates sets off a tangled sequence of secrecy, desire, and consequence. Stephen, a married Oxford tutor in his forties, becomes entangled with two students: the rich and affable William, and the beautiful, enigmatic Austrian named Anna. While his wife is away, having their third child, he rekindles an old flame in London, and the pair share a night together, the encounter leaving an impression of danger and longing.
Returning home, he finds that his pushy colleague Charley has been using the house for sex with Anna, a revelation that threads jealousy and power through the house. Anna privately tells Stephen that she and William are engaged to be married, tightening the knot of competing loyalties and hidden agendas.
William plans to visit Stephen’s house after a party that night, but his intoxication makes driving unsafe, so Anna takes the wheel. The couple crash outside the university gates, and Stephen pulls Anna from the wreckage, hiding her upstairs while he calls the police. The mood shifts from covert tension to abrupt, ethical crisis as the situation deteriorates.
Later, in the aftermath of fear and confusion, Stephen returns to Anna, and the emotional strain of the moment explodes into an act he cannot fully justify: he forces himself on her while she remains in shock, then escorts her back to her room at the university. The morning light brings a different reality, with Charley appearing bemused by the mess, and Anna preparing to leave for Austria, packing her things as the consequences of desire and manipulation begin to crystallize.
The narrative unfolds through careful, restrained storytelling, using shadows and quiet conversations to probe questions of consent, power, and the uneasy compromises people make when passion collides with responsibility. The film leaves viewers with a stark, unsettling examination of how flaws and choices ripple through multiple lives, long after the crash and the secrets have faded from the night.
