Ankoku Butoh is an avant‑garde Japanese dance that emerged in the post‑WWII counter‑culture art scene, founded by Tatsumi Hijikata, who created and performed works from the late 1950s into the early 1970s. Its movement is highly stylised, alternating slow and sharp gestures to convey dread, sexuality, violence, calm, birth and a sense of “creatureness.” The piece “Summer Storm” was filmed in 1973 at Westside Auditorium, Kyoto University, marking Hijikata’s final public performance before his death; the video was produced in 2003 by the Butoh of Dark Spirit School.
