In a cheerful and chaotic comedy, Norman Pitkin works as an apprentice to Mr Grimsdale, an old-fashioned, blunt butcher whose shop is a busy hub for small-town life. When a young thief raids the shop, Norman, always quick with a plan, convinces his employer to hide his gold watch in his mouth for safekeeping, a decision that backfires in a comic twist. Mr Grimsdale ends up swallowing the watch and is rushed to hospital. While visiting, Norman inadvertently triggers a flurry of mishaps that spread through the hospital wards, drawing attention from nurses and patients alike. There he meets Lindy, a quiet girl who has not spoken since her parents died in an airplane accident.
Banished from the hospital, Norman cannot visit Lindy, so the pair decide to join the St John Ambulance Brigade, a move that gives Norman a legitimate reason to return and see her. The situation remains ripe for chaos—the usual pandemonium that follows Norman unfolds as he takes on new duties and new misadventures within the Brigade. In time, Lindy visits him at a charity ball where the Brigade Band is performing, and the night descends into a controlled mess thanks to Norman’s antics. Yet the ending brings a warm redemption: Norman speaks to the gathering, the crowd opens its hearts with generous donations for the charity, and even the Brigade’s ambulance seems to roll away on its own as a symbol of newfound order. The following day, Norman wakes from a dream that places him back in hospital, a light-hearted reminder of the day’s chaotic yet ultimately hopeful events.
