A gunfighter stranded in the desert discovers the bloody aftermath of a stagecoach robbery that killed all passengers. He rides a captured horse to town to report the massacre, but is blamed for the robbery and the banker's murder. He hides in the basement of the sick sheriff’s house, where the sheriff lives with his daughter.

On foot in the blistering desert after the mercy killing of his horse, Wes Steele stumbles upon a stagecoach and a quiet heap of dead passengers. He salvages a fresh horse and pushes toward Mesa, the sun hammering down as he fights to reach civilization and some sense of safety.
An Acting Sheriff, [Ward Bond], confronts him as the stagecoach horses circle back to town, pulling a gun with stern authority. Steele shoots first, though not fatally, and bolts into the town, with a crowd of angry locals in hot pursuit. He slips into the back door of the bank to hide and quietly overhears the banker speaking with his partner about the robbery, the tension simmering just beneath the surface of everyday life.
