A King and His Movie 1986

The film follows David Vass, an obsessed filmmaker determined to craft an epic portrait of the French adventurer Orelie-Antoine de Tounens, who in the 19th century assumed the title of King of Patagonia and Araucania. From the outset, Vass treats his project as both a personal quest and a high-stakes gamble with money, time, and artistic integrity on the line.

He faces obstacles at every turn. Word leaks out to the Argentine media that he is finally making his film, forcing him to dodge headlines while he irons out preproduction. The hunt for the perfect actor to portray the king becomes a stubborn obstacle: professional auditions are rejected, and Vass turns to street casting. The man he deems ideal is a hippie who mistakes him for the police and darts away. After a tense pursuit, he persuades the would-be star to take the role.

With cast and crew assembled, they trek to southern Argentina to shoot. But disaster strikes when the financial backer pulls out, taking the film’s money and fleeing abroad. Suddenly, Vass cannot pay anyone, and supporters begin to abandon the project. He returns to the streets, chasing new recruits with dwindling resources and mounting pressure.

At last they reach the shooting location, only to discover they are too broke for proper lodging. They end up at an orphanage, a fragile victory tinged with discomfort. When an actor makes unwanted advances toward a minor, the place ejects them, forcing the troupe to sleep rough. The crew, unwilling to sleep in tents, leaves; the cast follows. Yet Vass refuses to quit, stepping into the king’s role himself and using mannequins as stand-ins to realize some of the film’s most haunting and surreal imagery. The production becomes as much a meditation on creativity under pressure as it is a biographical chronicle, blurring the lines between ambition, folly, and art.
