Kong-sang, a mainland Chinese girl, illegally enters Hong Kong hoping to retrieve her birth certificate—proof that she was born in this city—and to secure a sense of belonging she’s long yearned for. She escapes her smuggler, Shing [Shum Wai], after an incident where she injures him during a confrontation. The chaos of her escape collides with a police operation: Ho Ting-pong [Chow Yun-Fat], a principled detective, is assigned with his partner to take down drug dealer Addict Hung [Ng Hong-Sang] in a bustling supermarket. There, a sharp-eyed Long Man notices Kong-sang slipping something from the shelves and arrests her. While Ting-pong handles the repercussions, Addict Hung seizes a chance to flee—hitting Kong-sang with a car before vanishing into the city’s crowded streets.
Waking up in a hospital, Kong-sang fabricates amnesia to stall deportation, and in a surprising turn identifies Ting-pong as her husband. True to his chivalrous nature, he brings her home and cares for her, a shelter from the treacherous world outside. Ting-pong’s mother [Lee Heung-Kam] grows fond of Kong-sang and sees her as an ideal daughter-in-law, welcoming her into the small, warm orbit of their family. Yet the arrangement becomes delicate: to spare Ting-pong the burden of facing his girlfriend, Kong-sang chooses to wander the streets rather than disrupt the life he’s trying to build.
Through a long arc of trials and tribulations, Ting-pong and Kong-sang learn to trust one another, letting a cautious love take root amid complexities of identity, duty, and belonging. Their budding romance survives the strain of social expectations and the pressure of Kong-sang’s unsettled status. Just as happiness seems within reach, Shing reappears and kidnaps Kong-sang, thrusting the couple into a dangerous crisis that tests their courage, loyalty, and resolve to stay together against formidable odds.
