A Good Time for a Dime 1941

Inside a dim penny arcade, Donald Duck notices a row of Mutoscopes, each one costing a penny and offering a brief motion picture. The films are mostly light and family-friendly, such as the playful world of a tiny creature in Busy Life of a Bee or a glossy quick-view of Scenic View of Niagara Falls. Yet one entry draws him in with a more daring vibe: Dance of the Seven Veils. The screen presents a Daisy Duck-looking dancer dropping veils in a steady rhythm, veil after veil falling away as the performance unfolds, until the lights flicker and a blackout briefly hums through the arcade.

When the image murk clears, the screen reveals only the final moment—an emphatic, bold The End slide that leaves him with a mixture of curiosity and amusement. Looking for another quick diversion, he moves to a crane machine hoping to snatch a camera as a prize. His plan misfires in a comical twist: a sneeze sends prizes tumbling back into the machine, leaving him with nothing but a chorus of clinking metal and disappointed sighs.

Next up is a nickel for a coin-operated airplane ride. The ride is short, but Donald isn’t done trying to beat the system. He grabs the throttle in a desperate bid for a free burst of speed, pulling hard on the control, and in the process, removes the cockpit’s control stick. The plane spirals out of control, and he’s jolted from the seat, only to stay afloat by flapping his arms—acting like a real-world duck in flight for a moment. The ride buckles, reasserts him into the cockpit, and finally returns safely to the ground, leaving him feeling dizzy and airsick from the wild misadventure.

With a groan and a lingering blur in his vision, he shuffles out of the arcade, shoulder slumped yet stubbornly amused as the neon glow fades behind him. The experience, a string of comic near-misses and silly bravado, sticks in his mind as he steps back into the night air, the sounds of the arcade dimming to a distant hum.
