An aspiring opera singer, In-jeong Cha Ye-ryun sets off to the countryside with her college professor, Young-seon Lee Byung-joon, hoping to glean the final outcome of her audition for a future opera role. The trip begins with a quiet, intimate plan to discuss the audition beside a desolate riverbank where they light a campfire and share uneasy silences. But the mood shifts dramatically when Young-seon makes a predatory attempt, attempting to force himself on In-jeong. She escapes into the surrounding forest, while he struggles to free their stuck car. The moment reveals a troubling dynamic at their core, setting a fragile, tense rhythm for what follows.

Nearby, three local thugs on motorcycles roll into the scene and confront the car, escalating the danger. In-jeong, seeking safety, encounters a scooter rider who promises to take her to a public terminal after he reunites with his friends waiting back at the river. The rider turns out to be the group’s leader, and he confirms his control by bringing In-jeong back to the riverbank where she briefly re-encounters the frightened Young-seon, though neither acknowledges knowing the other. The atmosphere grows more menacing as the thugs share roasted pork and petty banter, while the leader reveals a cold, calculating streak.

From a bag on one motorcycle emerges a young student, Hyeon-jae Kim Si-hoo, who is dropped into the scene by the gang. The thug leader begins to harass the boy, and In-jeong voices her disapproval, sparking a volatile turn. The leader orders the vicious act of rape, and the two men are forced into a brutal contest with Young-seon while the student fights to defend himself. Hyeon-jae, who knows taekwondo, quickly gains the upper hand and defeats [Young-seon], turning the balance of power against the thugs. The student then overwhelms the gang, pummeling them until they lie unconscious.

In a shocking, drastic move, the boy digs a shallow hole in the riverbank, buries the thugs up to their chests, and douses their heads with gasoline, preparing to ignite them. As Yeong-seon runs for help, In-jeong pleads with the boy to stop, but the leader regains consciousness and strikes him with a shovel, breaking free and escaping. The brutal sequence leaves the thugs incapacitated, and the boy’s fate—whether he lives or dies—hangs in the balance as the situation spirals.

Meanwhile, Yeong-seon locates a police officer he had encountered earlier that day and explains the danger at the riverbank, including the kidnapped boy. The officer is the boy’s older brother, Moon-jae Han Suk-kyu, and together they rush back to the river. When they arrive, they find no one at the scene because the thugs have already moved the boy into the trunk of a car and driven it toward another river to vanish the evidence. The boy regains consciousness and, revealing a revolver he has hidden, fires several shots as the car crashes. The officer and the others eventually locate them, and the reunion is charged with raw, uneasy emotion.

The rescue culminates as the officer identifies the thug leader as his former schoolmate Bong-yeon, a figure who used to bully and physically abuse him. The confrontation becomes a cruel echo of past abuse, and the policeman ends up delivering a tormented, brutal beatdown before leaving with a small tin box from one of the thugs. The box originally contained cough powder, but a replacement poison—commonly used to capture birds—has been mistaken for cocaine. Believing it to be something else, the policeman tests the contents and dies soon after, becoming the sole victim of the harrowing ordeal.

In the end, the riverbank remains a site of unresolved trauma and revenge, where power, fear, and grief intersect in a stark, devastating tableau. The film lingers on the consequences of violence, the fragility of safety, and the costly, sometimes fatal, pursuit of justice.
