Cousins Leonard “Spike” Johnson (Patrick O’Bryan) and Hoax Arthur Wilmoth (Stephen Geoffreys) are teenagers who live with Hoax’s overtly religious and domineering mother Lucy Wilmoth (Sandy Dennis). Spike is the neighborhood motorcycle-loving troublemaker, while Hoax is an introverted nerd who carries a quiet, burning resentment because he can’t stand up for himself or win the romantic attention that seems effortless for Spike. Spike genuinely cares for his cousin and protects him from bullies, yet Hoax grips his frustrations close, believing he’ll never measure up.
Both boys stumble upon 976-EVIL, which on the surface looks like a playful, pay-for-fortunes novelty line, but is actually a doorway Satan uses to subtly corrupt people into his bidding. Spike loses interest quickly, but Hoax dives in further, turning the sinister discovery into a tool to settle old scores and retaliate against those who have wronged him.
Soon Hoax’s spirit is nearly subsumed by Satan, who possesses him to unleash death and destruction, culminating in an opening to Hell appearing before their house. Spike confronts Hoax, but is quickly overpowered. In a desperate last ploy, he calls earnestly to his cousin, reminding him of the vacation plans they had talked about for that summer.
Hoax’s fleeting soul resurfaces briefly, realizing the horror of what he’s become and begging for help. Spike, realizing Hoax is lost and cannot be separated from the demonic presence, betrays his cousin and throws him into the pit of Hell.
