180° SOUTH takes us on a journey into the life of one of the most remarkable environmentalists of our era, Yvon Chouinard. Instead of merely recounting Yvon’s history through aged photographs and statistical graphs, the film beautifully intertwines his narrative with a contemporary expedition inspired by a legendary journey from 1968. The discovery of lost film footage documenting that expedition reinvigorates interest in their adventure. This archival footage showcases Yvon and his best friend, Doug Tompkins, as they traverse pristine mountain ranges and untouched coastlines during their 5000-mile trek from California to the depths of Patagonia. For these adventurers, the 1968 expedition remains immortalized as “the trip of our lives.”

Fast forward to 1999, when a young American adventurer named Jeff Johnson stumbles upon this footage, igniting a decade-long dream of retracing their steps southward. In 2007, Jeff takes a bold leap, leaving everything behind to embark on a six-month quest along Chouinard’s iconic route, driven by the desire to discover untouched peaks and unsurfed waves while honoring the legacy of his heroes. Yet, as he journeys onward, he becomes increasingly aware of the environmental degradation threatening these natural wonders and the human endeavors striving to protect them.

From the film’s opening, each scene fluidly oscillates between Jeff’s modern-day expedition and conversations held in an age-old stone cabin deep within Patagonia. In this cabin, the now silver-haired Chouinard and Tompkins prepare freshly caught fish on a wood-burning stove. As the years have passed, their friendship and partnership in adventure have endured for over fifty years. Through simple yet powerful storytelling, they share their lives—tales that have achieved folklore status in outdoor circles. Classic archival clips and enchanting hand-drawn animation from artist Geoff McFetridge bring these narratives to life, weaving them into Jeff’s journey as a poignant exploration of their shared mission: to preserve the natural world.

As the film unfolds, Jeff encounters new characters, each offering their distinct perspectives. Gradually, it becomes evident that Jeff has been in the presence of the elderly adventurers in the cabin all along, probing them with questions that elicit the rich stories and philosophies we’ve witnessed. Remarkably, the narrative builds to a momentous crest: the looming prospect of the final grand climb of their lives together, as both men approach their seventies. This climb leads to an unnamed, unclimbed peak nestled within a vast two-million-acre preserve—a sanctuary that these two legends have helped to forge together.
