Against the backdrop of the 1974 Watergate era, Connie Lashley, a junior transcriber at the Nixon White House, stumbles onto a piece of history: the only recording of the notorious gap in the president’s tapes. Shaken by what she has heard, she reaches out to Paul Marrow, John Magaro, a reporter at The New York Times, and offers him a chance to hear it. The two meet for the first time at a quiet roadside diner and then drive to the Silver Sands Motel, a faded coastal retreat, hoping to listen to the reel in private.

The plan to keep things quiet collides with the motel’s atmosphere and its cast of colorful characters. The search for a working recorder leads them into the orbit of the place’s inhabitants: the one-eyed desk clerk, Jack, Richard Kind, whose sharp observations hide more than they reveal; a beach commune of hippies led by Barry, Sullivan Jones, who bring a laid-back intensity that undercuts the seriousness of the discovery; and an older married couple, Samuel and Lena, who own a tape machine but will lend it only if the younger guests join them for dinner. To stay under the radar, Connie and Paul pretend to be newlyweds, a cover that becomes increasingly difficult to maintain as the dinner stretches on and their hosts pry into the pair’s private life.

As the evening unfolds, the setting—a shuttered seaside motel, the hum of tape reels, the tension in the dining room—amplifies every doubt and every motive. What began as a careful, discreet exchange of information threads itself through a growing web of suspicion. The moment they finally sit down to listen, the line between truth and manipulation blurs: it becomes unclear who among the people around them can be trusted, and the danger of the recording becomes as much about the people in the room as about the historical revelation it carries. The result is a quiet, tense drama where proximity, secrecy, and ambition collide, forcing each character to confront what they are willing to believe—and what they are afraid to reveal.
