In 1937, Emma O’Connor [Danielle C. Ryan] returns to Doverville for the funeral of Mrs. Stevens, the woman who opened her home to so many dogs in need. A train glitch throws a wrench into Emma’s plans, forcing her to step off and hitch a ride instead. The roadside era around her feels older than 1937, yet a late-in-the-film document confirms the year. A mysterious traveler named Zoe, who resembles Kristen Wiig, offers Emma a ride. Zoe reveals she is a fortune teller with past onscreen credits alongside Bing Crosby, and she admits her psychic powers are real in at least one moment when the dogs must be saved, though she mainly leans on her acting talents to influence events.
