Scott Mosier

Scott Mosier (born March 5, 1971) in Vancouver, Washington, is an American‑Canadian film producer, director, and editor whose career has been tightly intertwined with the rise of independent cinema in the 1990s. While attending the Vancouver Film School he met future collaborator Kevin Smith, and the duo’s first chaotic student project, Mae Day: The Crumbling of a Documentary, cemented a partnership that would later spawn the View Askew universe. After Smith left school early, the two made a pact to finish their own scripts, and Mosier’s behind‑the‑scenes savvy soon earned him credit on cult classics such as Clerks (1994) and Mallrats (1995). Over the next decade he became known for wearing many hats—producing, editing, and frequently popping up on‑screen as quirky characters like Willam Black, the angry hockey player, and the Smooching Seaman—while helping Smith navigate budgets that grew from modest indie funds to multi‑million‑dollar productions. Mosier’s editing work on Dogma took nearly a year, and his cameo as the comics‑convention patron in Clerks became a memorable footnote in the series of Smith‑led films. He also served as executive producer on projects ranging from Good Will Hunting to the animated Clerks: The Animated Series, demonstrating a versatility that extended beyond the View Askew brand.

Beyond producing, Mosier co‑hosted the weekly SModcast podcast with Smith, contributing his sharp wit and industry insight to a devoted fan base. In 2007 his short documentary Salim Baba earned an Academy Award nomination, though he was ineligible for nomination due to the Academy’s two‑nominee limit per short. After announcing he would not produce Cop Out (2010), Mosier turned his attention to directing, co‑helming Illumination Entertainment’s animated feature The Grinch (2018) alongside Yarrow Cheney. He has also written six scripts for Disney’s Ultimate Spider‑Man and continues to appear in cameo roles, while maintaining a private family life with his wife Alex Hilebronner, whom he married in 2006.
