Nikita Mikhalkov

Nikita Sergeyevich Mikhalkov (born 21 October 1945 in Moscow, then part of the Soviet Union) is a profoundly influential Russian filmmaker, actor, screenwriter, and producer whose career spans more than six decades. Raised in a distinguished artistic family—his father Sergey Mikhalkov was a celebrated children's author and the lyricist of both Soviet and Russian national anthems, while his mother Natalia Konchalovskaya descended from noted painters—he entered the world of performance at the children's studio of the Moscow Art Theatre and later honed his craft at the Shchukin School. His early onscreen appearances in films such as Walking the Streets of Moscow (1964) and The Red Tent (1969) established him as a versatile actor, but his directorial debut, At Home Among Strangers (1974), marked the beginning of a remarkable directing career. Mikhalkov’s subsequent works—A Slave of Love (1976), An Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano (1977), and the internationally acclaimed Urga (1991)—earned him awards at Cannes, Venice, and the Academy Awards, including the Oscar for Burnt by the Sun (1994). He has repeatedly earned the State Prize of the Russian Federation and numerous high honors such as the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" in all four classes, reflecting his stature in Russian culture. Beyond cinema, Mikhalkov has been a prominent public figure: he served as president of the Russian Union of Cinematographers, chaired the Moscow International Film Festival, and has been an outspoken supporter of Russian national policies, frequently appearing in political discourse and supporting President Vladimir Putin. His personal life includes two marriages—first to actress Anastasiya Vertinskaya (1966‑1971) and then to Tatiana Mikhalkova (since 1973)—and four children, among them actresses Anna and Nadezhda. Despite controversy over his political statements and involvement in cultural controversies, Mikhalkov remains a towering, albeit polarizing, figure in contemporary Russian arts.
