Neil Marshall

Neil Marshall is an English film and television director, editor, producer, and screenwriter born on 25 May 1970 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark at age eleven, he began crafting Super 8 mm home movies before enrolling at Newcastle Polytechnic in 1989, where he honed his editing skills during eight years as a freelance editor. His breakthrough came with the 2002 horror cult classic Dog Soldiers, a film that cemented his reputation for visceral, high‑octane storytelling, and was followed by the critically acclaimed The Descent (2005), which earned him the British Independent Film Award for Best Director and placed him among the notorious Splat Pack. Marshall’s versatility shone through with the science‑fiction action venture Doomsday (2008), a larger‑budget project blending futuristic soldiers and medieval knights, and the historical war picture Centurion (2010) starring Michael Fassbender and Dominic West. He later contributed the segment "Bad Seed" to the anthology Tales of Halloween (2015) and directed the 2019 reboot of Hellboy, a film he later disowned, before returning to horror with The Reckoning (2020) under his own Scarlett Productions banner.

On television, Marshall has left an indelible mark with episodes of Game of Thrones ("Blackwater" and "The Watchers on the Wall"), the latter earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing, as well as work on Black Sails, Constantine, Hannibal, Westworld, Timeless, and Lost in Space, the last two he also executive‑produced. In 2015 he co‑founded Applebox Entertainment with agent Marc Helwig, securing a two‑year deal with Legendary TV. His personal life includes a marriage to Belgian director Axelle Carolyn (2007‑2016) and an engagement to British actress Charlotte Kirk as of 2020.
