Karthik Subbaraj

Karthik Subbaraj (born 19 March 1983) is an Indian film director, producer and screenwriter who has become a distinctive voice in contemporary Tamil cinema. Raised in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, he completed his schooling at SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School before pursuing a degree in mechatronics at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, where he also participated in stage shows and skits. His father, Gajaraj, an actor known for supporting roles in films such as Mundasupatti and Kabali, provided early exposure to the film industry. During his college years Karthik created the short film Kaatchipizhai, which earned selection in the Nalaya Iyakunar competition, marking his first foray into filmmaking and hinting at his later narrative sensibilities. His breakthrough arrived with the low‑budget thriller Pizza (2012), a razor‑sharp heist‑horror that achieved commercial success and was later remade in Hindi, Bengali and Kannada. The film's inventive plot twists and stylish visual language secured Karthik a reputation for bold storytelling, paving the way for his much‑anticipated project Jigarthanda (2014). Although initially unable to fund Jigarthanda, the triumph of Pizza allowed him to bring the ambitious crime drama to the screen, where it garnered critical acclaim and earned actor Bobby Simha a National Film Award. Esteemed directors S. Shankar and Mani Ratnam publicly praised Karthik’s fresh perspective, cementing his status as a rising auteur. Following Jigarthanda, Karthik continued to explore varied themes with the socially conscious Iraivi (2016), a nuanced examination of women’s lives and the patriarchal pressures they endure, which was lauded for its empathetic portrayal. He then ventured into experimental territory with the silent thriller Mercury (2018), starring Prabhu Deva, though it met with mixed box‑office results. Expanding into mainstream cinema, he directed the high‑profile action drama Petta (2019) starring Rajinikanth, demonstrating his ability to balance commercial spectacle with his distinctive narrative flair. His production house Stone Bench Creations has backed projects such as the Amazon Original Penguin and the Hotstar series Triples, reflecting his commitment to diverse storytelling platforms. Recent works include the anthology short Miracle for Putham Pudhu Kaalai (2020), the Navarasa episode Peace (2021), and the genre‑blending Jagame Thandhiram (2021), which sparked debate for its departure from his usual plot‑twist formula. In 2022 he delivered Mahaan on Amazon Prime Video, and he continued the Jigarthanda universe with Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023) before directing the critically praised and commercially successful Retro (2025), starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde. Critics note his penchant for intertextual references, Tarantino‑style flamboyance, and the inclusion of real‑world political commentary, yet Karthik himself asserts a desire to reinvent with each project, eschewing a fixed cinematic style.
