What's After the Movie

Bennett Miller

Bennett Altman Miller is an American film director and producer whose work has left an indelible mark on contemporary cinema. Born on December 30, 1966 in New York City, he grew up in a household that blended technical precision and artistic sensibility, his father being an engineer and his mother a painter, a combination that later informed his meticulous visual style. In his youth he formed lasting friendships with writer Dan Futterman and actor Philip Seymour Hoffman at Mamaroneck High School and the New York State Summer School of the Arts, a trio that would eventually collaborate on the critically acclaimed Capote. Miller briefly attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he co‑founded the short‑lived Bullstoi Ensemble theater company alongside Hoffman and Steven Schub, before dropping out to pursue independent filmmaking. His directorial debut, the 1998 documentary The Cruise, captured the gritty reality of a New York City bus tour guide with handheld digital cameras and surprised audiences, opening doors to larger projects. After turning down several offers, Miller secured financing for Capote (2005), casting Hoffman as Truman Capote and earning two Academy Award nominations, including Best Director, while also guiding Catherine Keener to a nod. He followed this success with the 2011 sports‑drama Moneyball, a commercial and critical triumph that earned further Oscar nominations for Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. Miller’s most recent feature, Foxcatcher (2014), starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, solidified his reputation for extracting powerful performances, resulting in five Academy Award nominations and a Best Director award at Cannes. Beyond narrative film, Miller has directed music videos for Scarlett Johansson, television commercials such as a 1999 Charlotte Hornets spot, and continues to explore documentary work on technology, recently gaining early access to AI image‑generation tools. Though he describes himself as a “tumbleweed” with no permanent possessions, Miller’s artistic contributions continue to shape the landscape of modern filmmaking.
